Burnley will get first crack at USL stars

ACCESSIBILITY to players is the main reason why Burnley have opted to link up with a United Soccer Leagues side, and not one of the big hitters in the top American division, Major League Soccer.

"All the players in the MLS are owned co-operatively, so there's a problem there if you want to buy players from the MLS you can only buy them by negotiating with the whole league, so USL has more independence so clubs can do transactions in their own right," explained Burnley's oper-ational director Brendan Flood.

"It's easier to get the players, and the good thing about where we will be is that the players will be at a younger age, and when you link into a franchise with a certain state, you automatically get a collective agreement with the youth set-ups within that state.

"Say Carolina, for instance, there are 10,000 kids playing football through their youth set-up and they can come through. If there are any stars we get the first crack at those guys."

Potential transfer targets would require a European passport in order for a switch to Turf Moor to be sanctioned. However, USL president, Francisco Marcos, who is helping the Clarets with their search for an American partnership, has explained a way around the system.

"The nature about the US population is that it's multi-cultural so 60 per cent of the players that you see have a European connection," said Flood. Probably 40 per cent would have to loan them out to Portugal or Belgium and get a registration in Europe so that they could come and play in the UK.

"But the good thing about people like Francisco is that he's strategically organising these relationships so if we, as a club, want to get players who are US born, he can make the connection with a Portuguese club, get a player loaned out and then they can come to the UK to play once they've got a European passport, so they are thinking about all the right ways of successful connectivity."

For once a good idea.... but nobody comments on. It is so easy to be negative about say lafferty. Give Flood and Coyle a chance and vent your views in say two seasons. Look at man city with hughes. We are not a rich club and will need to build slowly towards the prem. I can remember the times in the old 4th div and I would give my right arm then to be where we are now. Last comment BFC has ever been in profit for a long while due to gates etc. Hence we need to do a "Bolton model" and slowly without massive debt get in the premiership but it will take time.

What is the point of coming on here just to be negative, maybe expend more energy worrying about your own club & its future.

Personally I agree that it is an untapped market & there is inevitably masses of talent in a country that excels at virtually any sport you care to mention & football will follow in the trend.

A club of Burnley's financial structure has to explore every possible avenue in the hope of getting value for money & I am encouraged by the efforts being made to try & ensure we remain competitive at our current level & potentially higher with any luck.

I live in a USL city and I can say that not everyone that plays in USL is rubbish. Some of the players are actually quite good. The key thing to remember is that the salary cap in MLS is pitifully small. Many MLS capable players play in USL because they can earn more money there. It is a good idea for Burnley.

Bluenwhite, there are some diamonds in the rough in USL. You may have heard of Marcus Hanehmann or Reading or Jay Demerit of Watford. They both played USL. Some of the USL players are in the national team pool for countries like T & T or Jamaica. While Marcos may have overstated how easy it will be to get the EU passport it appears to me that the idea is probably worth exploring. There may be some good bargain. Crystal Palace has a USL2 side and while no players have been discovered at the adult level yet, there are already been a couple academy kids that have gotten a look over on the otherside. Just something to think about.

There are a number of other Championship sides with ties to USL teams including Stoke City (Austin Aztex), Sheffield Wednesday (Kalamazoo Outrage), and Reading (Ocean City Barons). EPL side West Ham United also has a affiliation with the USL.
