BLACKBURN Rovers were forced to settle for a point against the 10-men of Reading on a frustrating afternoon at the Madejski Stadium.
Desperate for a victory to boost their hopes of securing an Intertoto place, Rovers failed to capitalise on the second half dismissal of Marek Matejovsky, who was sent off with 18 minutes to go.
In fairness, though, Reading put a spirited fightback and might even have nicked an unlikely victory at the death had Stephen Warnock not got back to head an Andre Bikey effort off the goal-line during a dramatic finale.
Reading's best opportunity of the first half came after just six minutes, when former Burnley midfielder John Oster fired in a dangerous low cross from the right which struck Ryan Nelsen at the near post, and Stephen Hunt stabbed the loose ball wide from six yards out under pressure from Andre Ooijer.
Rovers enjoyed the lion's share of possession but little was seen of Mark Hughes' side as an attacking force until eight minutes before the break.
An electric run from Jason Roberts took the striker deep into enemy territory, before a defender crudely chopped him down in full flight.
From the resulting free-kick, Morten Gamst Pedersen then forced Marcus Hahnemann into his only meaningful save of the half, the American tipping the winger's rising drive over his crossbar.
Shortly after that, Hahnemann and Ryan Nelsen both entered the referee's notebook after a spot of handbags on the edge of the area.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with clear-cut goalscoring opportunities still at a premium.
Hunt should have done better than blaze wastefully over the crossbar after Liam Rosenior had brilliantly picked him out with a raking cross.
Then Hunt stabbed another effort wide following a lay-off from Dave Kitson.
At the opposite end, David Bentley looked the man most likely to make things happen for Rovers.
The England international went close with a dipping volley that brought the best out of Hahnemann.
Then a Bentley free kick found Zurab Khizanishvili, who was completely unmarked and looking suspiciously offside, but the Georgian's header was superbly kept out by Hahnemann.
Reading were reduced to 10-men in the 72nd minute when Matejovsky was red-carded for a second bookable offence on Roberts.
After that, either side could have snatched a winner.
Hunt completely mis-kicked in the area with the goal at his mercy, and Bikey was then denied by Warnock, who cleared his header off the line.
The closest Rovers came was an effort from Santa Cruz that was smothered by Hahnemann.

Mr Clattenberg once again managed to ruin a game and steal the show himself. He must be so insecure! What a complete idiot! But did any rovers fan expect anything different from this incompetent fool? I agree players should have much more respect for the officials but they drive the players to distraction. some obvious mistakes by the linesman on the main stand side. talking of respect for refs, what happened to the law of moving the ball 10 yrds further forward for dissent. If refs dont use this law what do they expect? aside from that another decent point away. think i'll buy an away season ticket next season instead!!

Hi all, let's get a grip ok so the rovers were disapointing missed a hatful of chances but if you look at it we are a point nearer where we need to be as sparky says the international break has done us again so maybe there is a valid excuse as the games that have gone on midweek and pointless meanlingless friendlies but wait a minute we have picked up a point in the premiership away from home which is hard and we have not dropped any places and it is probably now worse for those directly below us villa were utter **** again and more importantly they are now really under pressure after Carew's injury today and if you see Man. City are already on there holidays cos they have again been **** at the end of the day 7 points behind there is still a chance of 5th place and uefa cup footie also with everton also having a sticky patch at the moment there is still a chance the only team who could nick that 5th spot is pompey and with defoe firing on all cylinders that will be a tough game and will probably determine where we end up but there are still a lot of points to be had and looking at the run in apart from L'pool, Man.Utd, the rest of the games are winnable and with points a few end of season victories we stand a good chance of uefa cup qualification. COYB Laters all.

A game that could have easily been won! Zura missed the best chance when the Reading defence was all over the place but you have to give some credit to Hahnemann who made some great saves and kept most of Santa cruz's shots out. Lets not forget Brad who kept us away from defeat. The ref so deserved a slap, cards were coming out for the littlest tackles. Most Pedersens crosses were flat but I have sympathy for the guy because he had a flue. Disappointed with the performance and its a shame that Vogel never came on. NEVER MIND, WE CAN DO MUCH BETTER IN THE COMING GAMES. COME ON ROVERS!!

Q - how many players do you have to have offside before it is given. A - yesterday obviously more than the yellow cards the stupid ref gave out! Chance missed by Rovers but as MH said the international week took its toll. The inter-two bob cup is an option but perhaps more important we could finish between 6th and 10th and with the new TV deal being worth 3/4 million quid a place that's £4m quid up for grabs. Although it doesn't excite like trophies it could boost MH's kitty in the summer. Anyone seen the Blimp?

"In fairness, though, Reading put a spirited fightback and might even have nicked an unlikely victory at the death"..as a Reading fan who was at the game I have never read a more biased, un founded and ill judged remark. Reading made all the running against probably the most average team I've seen at the Madejski this season and even with a man advantage and five strikers on the pitch we created the best chances.Rovers had an end of season mid table attitude today which apparently Man City and West Ham have has well, so lets be a bit fairer about these reports please.
