Samba: Our attitude was all wrong

1:07pm Monday 10th March 2008

comment Comments (61)   Have your say »

BLACKBURN Rovers defender Chris Samba said he and his team-mates had only themselves to blame for allowing two precious points to slip through their fingers against Fulham at the weekend.

Rovers appeared to be heading for a third straight victory in the Premier League, until Jimmy Bullard popped up with an 89th minute equaliser to earn struggling Fulham an unlikely share of the points.

Although there was an element of controversy about Bullard's late leveller, Samba said Rovers ultimately got what they deserved on the day, because he felt they were guilty of underestimating their relegation-haunted opponents.

"It's our fault because we were not mentally prepared - I think we thought it would be easy," lamented the Congo international.

"We have to learn a valuable lesson from this that no game in the Premier League is easy.

"It doesn't matter whether you are playing a team from the top of the league or a team from the bottom, you still have to prepare for each game in exactly the same way.

"I think we maybe went into it with the wrong attitude.

"The first half was just flat, nothing happened, and we just wasted 45 minutes. Then we ended up paying the consequences.

"We are very disappointed with this result and performance."

The day had started badly, with Portsmouth's victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup closing another possible avenue into Europe.

Then Rovers blew the chance to make up some vital ground on the teams above them in the table when they failed to build on Morten Gamst Pedersen's goal in the 59th minute.

"It's a big opportunity missed - it's the kind of game teams at the top would have closed out at 1-0 with five minutes to go but we didn't perform as a team," said Samba.

"We were wide open to the counter, and there is plenty for us to work on this week.

"What is disappointing is it's the things we do every game, and we know we can do, that let us down here.

"It was the kind of game we needed to take more seriously, player by player, from the very first moment we stepped on the pitch."

As for the free-kick that led to Fulham's equaliser, which was awarded against Samba for a high foot, the Rovers defender felt it was a harsh decision.

"It was a bit harsh. If it had been in the box then I'm sure he wouldn't have given it.

"The referee gave it for a high foot, but I had to make the challenge. I won the ball.

"He just said to me, 'Chris, you got the ball but I think it was dangerous play'. I think if it was in the box he'd never have given it.

"It's one of those that some days is given and other days it is not. On this occasion it was and it's cost us."

Rovers reserves play Newcastle United tonight at Morecambe's Christie Park (kick off 7pm).

Finally, a member of the team - and a relative newcomer at that - has the courage to say what many of us have said for a long time.

Rovers' have a definite arrogance and conceit when they come up against 'lesser' teams - especially at Home.

Until this conceit is eradicated, the team, sadly, will languish in the middle section of the League Table.

It isn't as though they couldn't ALL have seen, what Chris Samba speaks of. It's a plain as a pikestaff to anyone who isn't blinded by prejudice

At present, the team needs more 'balls' and a real desire to win.

at last....a player that has seen the game like a true supporter, and sadly this has been happening in every home game since the defeat by Pompy, we have been getting away with results and although playing 'negative' football away from home is not a problem given the results acheived, playing like that at home specially against the likes of Fulham is shocking - Hughes tactics are bizzare and he either don't trust his players to perform, which has certainly been the case this season or simply getting it wrong! (i know not all the time!)

Roveria, england says...

I thought the idea of going away for a week was to prepare mentally for the remainder of the season and two games later we're back to sloppy possession in the last 5 minutes of a game. I have no complaints about the free-kick being given because, as Samba said, we should have been more comfortable at that point anyway. Very frustrating.

Well said, Chris Samba and Roy Anderson. That isn't by any means the only first half we have "wasted' this season, and it is the same kind of conceit (i.e. all we need to do to win is turn up) that got us knocked out of the UEFA Cup against Larissa (Bayern Munich, Red Star Belgrade, Atletico Madrid and Sporting Lisbon anyone?) and the FA Cup, when, after last season's heroics and the way the competition has gone this year, we could have finally ended our drought after 80 years.

Lets hope this a kick-up the backside for the remainder of the season.
If euro is out of the equation then as high up the table we can finish for a larger share of the prize money.

see? just what i'm talking about, mentaility, psychology. the players should get together before each game and do a group visualization excercise where each of them imagines playing to their potential that afternoon and making a major impact on the game. the more they do it, the clearer it will be in their heads, and it will send them out against whatever opposition with a PMA Positive Mental Attitude.

It's like golf, Tiger woods visualizes playing great each time before he plays, it's why he's the best. Like Ronaldo mentally sees the ball going into the net on a free kick before hitting it. Visualization. Just expand that more. Mark, if you're reading, this is a great idea

Joe P, Auburn Maine says...

Yes....it was dangerous play but isn't the penalty for that an INDIRECT free kick? Thus, Bullards goal wouldn't be counted as it touched nobody before going into the net.

did you watch the game.. the ball was laid off to him you nuggert

Parky, Manchester says...
4:15pm Mon 10 Mar 08

Spot on with the indirect thing - it was touched by another player before Bullard struck it.

However he literally only tapped it, the ball didnt actually move.

I recall a rule about the ball having to travel one full revolution before the free kick couldnt be considered taken??

Does anyone else think thats true? Or is that only for penalties?

Or have I imagined it completely!

This "laid-back" attitude of the players must come from the manager and his team. Otherwise, why is he not stamping it out. I am a big fan of Hughes but, at work, if one of my team isn't performing as the manager I am asked by my bosses why that is and I am in trouble if it continues. I watch for complacency in my staff so why isn't Hughesie? For too long we have dropped points against "lower" teams. We should be grinding these teams into the ground like the Man U's and Chelseas of this world. If Hughes really wants to manage one of those clubs in the future he needs to be instilling that into his players and not putting up with blatant slacking!! Well done Samba for speaking up, now go and knock the heads of the worst offenders (McCarthy? Pedersen?) together after all your bl**dy big enough!!!!

The fans could tell the moment the players started the game. You could sing your heart out and it would make no difference because they could not be bothered. It's happened too many times this season and we are very lucky to be in the position we now find ourselves. Trying to blame the fans who have shelled out hard earned cash to see a match of players actually playing as if the shirt meant something to themis out of order. We know how good the players can be but too many times this season they have soundly let us down and got points more through luck than industry. Come on lads, show us what you are made of and let's win the rest of the season's games.

a bad performance, and everybody are throwing the toys ut of the pram. this seasn our results against the so called lesser teams is keeping is were we are. top ten played 14 points 10, 1 win man city.
bottom 10 played 15 points 36, 3 doubles and 1 4 pointer, plus another 4 wins. the only team in the lower half we havnt taken points from is wigan.
when are we going to accept that teams in the lower half of the table are not going to come to ewood and lie down, they are going to come and make things difficult for us. we played rubbish on saturday everybody accepts that, the players realise it too.
how were hughsies tactics bizzare, we started 4 -4-2 with two wide men, how is that bizzare?
we ended up playing 4-4-2 a more pacey player up front and a more forward thinking player on the right. the change brought a goal, and we created two or three other chances after that so how is that bizzare?
im dissapointed with saturdays result, im more dissapointed with the performance, but no doubt the manager and the players are also feeling it.

Banishing all children to the family enclosure just because someone wants to break the ground rules and stand up is rather selfish, don't you think? I want my child to see the match from the side of the ground rather than from behind the goal and there are plenty of ways of singing and generating atmosphere without having to stand up and spoil it for those behind you.

The Clash – did they not insult The Beatles? – Brains must be Pretty Vacant? You should be ashamed to call yourself a sophisticated Riversider – punk music was more a Blackburn End rant!!

Anyway some great comments from Woody and all about great passed games on Friday. Seems a split between the older fans knowing what 1987 and 1992 meant after all the 26 years of pain well our younger fans who lets be honest have been spoilt tend to plump for 1995.
Lets not forget the 5-0 on April 1st 2001 though. We can live off that memory for years especially after all the “build up” after 17 years by our Yorkshire friends.
Souness’s post match comment about the ref being soft not giving us 3 certain penalties and Stan the Mans naming of the entire Rovers squad followed by the great Minis vs Ferraris quote. Stan must have terrified his team pre kick-off. Can’t think of any day that has given us so much satisfaction that will last for so long (especially on these pages!). 2-0 at Turf and 5-0 at Ewood – with it being Easter soon there’s only Jesus I can think of who got more mileage out of a 5 and a 2!!

Admire your faith Ossy but do you now accept that being 10 points behind Everton (who are not using the Europe excuse) could be down to not spending any of the new TV contract £15-£20 million either last summer or in Jan? Everton signed Yakubu and others for about £20m despite always being more skint than us - it does not add up however much we keep the faith.

loose) theres teams way below us in the league who spent more money
than us in the summer. There are teams below us in the league who spent
more money than us during the transfer window and havnt picked up as
many points as us.
The two teams who are nearest to us in the league points wise both
spent money in the last window city won 2 from 8, pompey won 2 from 7.
spending cash for the sake of spending doesnt guarantee anything.

Some good songs there Ossy . But GM is a bit left side of the field for me. I prefer Sh*gger Jagger and "I can't get no Satisfaction" for Rovers this season. We have blown a great chance.
Fair points by Jeppo too so I suppose it is about opinions. But we still spent nowt wholst the rest of the Prem did out of the biggest TV contract in history - man!!

Woody – finally finished your mini book of Friday. I still think punk rock was “B*llocks” – “Never mind the music here’s the Sh*t Pistols. Will the Messiah at Newcastle survive Easter though?
One more for you here Morst....
CARDIFF. A hell of a place for those that ventured to Ninian Park in the dark days.
Picture this.
2 coaches. A red one(pretty plush considering) & a good old Ribblesdale.
Barely 100 supporters(Rovers)
Score, cant remember? I think it was 2-1 for them?
Boarding the coaches whole hell breaks loose & I mean hell!!
Every single window on the two coaches - gone!
Cardiff fans on the coaches- Hell
Police stood by watching!!
Asian guy called Roger driving our coach who's window was the only one left intact!!
Me & others, small enough climbed on the bag shelf above the seats while the coach was rocked side to side.
The Police still stood there!!
Absolute terror.....Why did this occur?
One word....ABAVAN(The landslide)
All footy fans(in there wisdom) thought that it was ok to mock that tragedy at the time) & boy did we pay for that!!
In fact during the week, post match,I was even invited onto 'Granada Reports' along with others to re-live the murderous events!!
Walking down the side of the old Nuttal St stand, pitch side..
A very scary experience.
At Cardiff for the 'Worth Cup' I parked my car on a car park,un-beknowing to me, literally next to the coaches all them years ago...Scary(& the ground is still exactly the same, a 20th century relic!!)
Just how many times in my young life did I put my life on the line for BRFC?
Staggering.
I traversed between both ends(Blackburn & Riverside) in those days simply because you could- 'Oh the freedom'
NEVER MIND THE BO**OCKS-pure craft & one that stands the test of time my friend. Blew the doors wide open for all that choose too - see!!
Dont forget 'THE CLASH' the clash(no Elvis Beatles or The Rolling Stones-in 1977) 1st album...
A social conscience personified.........

& then the time we as BRFC supporters have been waiting for- a complete rout of our fierce rivals......(Oi I didn't know Dunny could fly-only Kevin Ball can answer that!! & Jason Mc-what a guy!!)
Dont it just make you feel good....
The wine was bitter on Sat eve Morst due to our abject performance....I was quietly confident Saturday, but hey what do I know!!
Those bloody cold winds were blowing right down that Riverside too!!
Umm- The Messiah?
He looks ghost like dont you think?-Like as to say'what the hell have I taken on here'!!
Is Hughes back in the frame?
Go easy.

I was on that coach at Cardiff in 1976. I had managed to get a complimentary ticket off David Wagstaffe & had sat in the little stand (Canton Stand) behind the goal. After the match there were about 200 police stood around the exits from that end of the ground doing absolutely nothing, whilst the coaches parked down the other end were surrounded by hundreds of Cardiff fans. The coaches were trying to drive off whilst Rovers fans were still trying to get back on them. I also seem to remember 'Roger' the driver getting off to chase a fan who had just lobbed a brick at his windscreen. Eventually the remains of the coach were 'escorted' to Canton Police Station to await a replacement coach to take us home - I think it was about 7pm before we finally left Cardiff.

Andy what a 'hellish day' that was.
Roger jumped off the coach at the exact moment my pal had a brick thrown at him through the door of the coach & he still has the scar(or imprint) on his shoulder!! Hence the upper baggage rack!!
I will never forget the 'Police' standing & watching this...I was 15.
The coach was hiked off to a safe place & I always remember a old toilet near to where we parked(after the police escort)
Roger was a colossus that day.
The point of all this down memory lane, for me at least, is about the loyalty & dedication to ones football club.
Through good, bad bad times & a call above duty at times.
As I said in a previous post'I hope this club dont bite the hand that feeds it'?

Chico as one got through here!!
But in response to your call for more vocal support,if indeed your a genuine fan of BRFC, believe me I've been to most prem grounds & our vocal support is,if not better than most on it's day(at home)
Away supporters always, always out sing(not out loud) the home crowd(99%) of the time.
Local derbies aside,of course!!
What I will say to your comments is that the soul as left football & unless you travel to South America or Europe, say Turkey, you will never see passion on the terraces(seating) again in British Football.

hey come on credit were credits due that took me all of 30mins to produce. i thought it was quite good.
as for the footy there is nothing better than being at a live game. winning by a goal or holding on to a draw when your getting battered, the board comes up 3 more mins, those 3 mins feel like an eternity, time stands still. or chasing a goal to get a point or a win against a team your battering, the board comes up 3 more mins, those 3 mins last 3 secs they just fly by.
the excitment as one of your team produces a piece of skill which results in a goal, or a great save from your keeper, bad decisions/ good decisions rubbish refs / good refs you just dont get any of that watching on the telly or listening on the radio, the experience of a live game is irreplaceable.
no matter how bad the game or how bad your team plays, we come away shaking our heads mumbling what a waste of money im never going again, then by the time you get home the world is slightly better and by the time the next game comes around your team is the best team in the world and is going to batter allcomers.

Cracking Ossy...cracking.
Ossy,I think Morst as looked into eye of the beast thus destroying his love affair with his club.
For Rovers to lose such a ardent supporter is, in my opinion, bad news.
What do they say 'we only have 9000 REAL supporters' in the cold light of day.
By this I mean if we was back down in the basement leagues then the Morsts & us would still be going on to support OUR club.
I believe we have 20,000 fans simply because of the position we are in - the Prem.
It's a difficult situation.
Sentiment is,I feel no longer the prime requisite in football.
Big business is capable of destroying the most ardent of hearts.I have empathy with Morsts situation & hope it dont bite me..

hey woody too true i think morst is a lost cause though, which is a shame. the target should be the 16 to 21 year olds, they are the future. if you get them to support through that age range they tend to stay. if they drift away due to other committments (sex drugs and rock and roll) its hard to get them back.
ive no idea what the pricing structure is for young adults but if we are looking for reductions thats were it should be.

I guess like any club they will always have a catchment of young people.
How to build on the already steady trickle of people is,my guess,SUCCESS on the pitch.
Glamour seems to be the attraction of football clubs ie Man Utd etc.
Rovers, purely by it's geographical location & it's people(gritty, down to earth) can not compete with that glamour.
Good incentive by the club(which in the main it does) will keep us competing thus keeping our fan base as we see it now.
Up to 9/10 yrs old Arsenal were my team simply because I played Subbutteo.
Rovers just wern't in the lime light(but I soon seen the light!!)
No-one needs incentive to fall in love with your club it just happens(as I'm sure many know) but once £'s are the principal then people will make choices on that basis.
They have to do or stomachs will be empty!!
Rovers do a good job(could be improved I'm sure)in attracting new people to the club but people will always drift away at some point due to other real commitments but the key is do they come back?
I did simply because Rovers had given me so so much too remember at a impressionable age.
Promotion.Centenary.

Noisy crowds.Atmosphere.Ne

ar misses.Friends(who I still see today)Free entry!!
IT's a tough old world out there for clubs such as ours, but our love & loyalty is no less than any who get gates of 50000.
Lets hope the new generations have that(as you & I do) devotion to what is our game-Footy(esp at BRFC)

Makes more sense than you think Ossy. For 125 years fans kept their clubs afloat with the odd top up from local business if the milk bill was unpaid. Then come the Sky etc billions and what happens 1) Thanks guys here's your reward a free ST for 10 years or 2) Lets up the prices, nudge the traditional fans out and slip the Prawnies in through the back door. That's footy in general - at Rovers we were prepared to back Uncle J for putting his money where his mouth was and the gate stats in 1995/6 are incredible for a small town. If the Government (Strawman that's you!)or EEC actually did anything for the people then they would make it law that all prices are say £10 adults and £5 kids max for live tickets. If this happened that the players god bless em would have to manage on 80k a week instead of 100k a week. So why have fans been so weak and just let this happen?
