Savage is left in limbo

ROBBIE Savage's future is still in the air after Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes confirmed last night that Sunderland have still to meet his asking price.

The former Welsh international, who was left out of Hughes' squad as Rovers beat the Black Cats 1-0 at Ewood, is still thought to be Roy Keane's top transfer target.

However, as of this morning, the Wearsiders were still some way short of Rovers' £2 million valuation of the 33-year-old - leaving the way clear for a possible rival bid.

"We didn't discuss Robbie's situation before the game but it's well documented that Sunderland have expressed an interest," said Hughes last night.

"Up to now, they haven't met our valuation on Robbie, but they may well do that in the next couple of days, then we'll make a decision.

"But other clubs have expressed an interest as well, so it's not cut and dried as yet."

Keane was keeping his cards fairly close to his chest last night, but it is thought the Irishman will now step up his bid to land Savage, possibly even completing a deal before the week is out.

Hughes added: "We've got a valuation on Robbie and that's not been met yet.

"If that does get met then possibly something will happen.

"But it's not a case of just trying to get Robbie out of the door, because he's been great for us during his time here.

"Obviously, if we feel there is business to be done and it benefits us, and we can do something with the money that is generated, then we'll look at it."
