Dunn: Euro exit could be blessing in disguise

9:32am Wednesday 17th October 2007

comment Comments (37)   Have your say »

ROVERS midfielder David Dunn is hoping the club's disappointment at being knocked out of the UEFA Cup will prove to be a blessing in disguise.

Mark Hughes' men were beaten 3-2 on aggregate by Greek side Larissa last week, despite winning the second leg 2-1 at Ewood Park.

Last season, Rovers had Thursday night games in Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Holland and Germany to contend with as well as their domestic programme.

It put a strain on the Rovers squad, but it's one that Dunn and his team-mates won't have to contend with this season.

And the 28-year-old star is hoping the reduced workload will be worth its weight in trophies.

He said: "It was disappointing to be knocked out of the competition. I think we gave ourselves too much to do from the first leg. That's unfortunate but there's still three big competitions to play for and we're looking forward to the challenge.

"We would still like to be in the competition, that goes without saying, but less games hopefully will mean we're fresher going into the league games and the other cup games."

Rovers lie sixth in the table and their next big cup game comes on October 31 when they travel to Portsmouth in the fourth round of the League Cup.

Dunn was a member of the victorious Worthington Cup side of 2001/2002 that beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at the Millennium Stadium and is hoping to play at the new Wembley in the final again in its latest guise - the Carling Cup.

He added: "We've got a big game against Portsmouth in the League Cup. The League Cup is one we won not too long ago and it would be nice to get to another final.

"The manager, staff and all the players - every game we play we want to win. I'm sure every team does. We've got enough ability in the squad to beat anyone.

"That's the mentality and the attitude we've all got now."

Several Rovers players are still away on international duty and return for the weekend's visit of Reading.

And Dunn is hoping he and his team-mates can make it five wins on the bounce with victory over the Royals.

He said: "It's been a really good start. Coming into this international break, if someone had said we'd be sixth at this point in the season then we'd have snapped their hand off.

"We're hoping to get something from every game we have. Reading have done really well since they've been promoted and it's not going to be an easy game. But if we do things right and we play like we know we can then we'll be fine."

Hibbeg,

You want a response in context with the article so here are 3 relevant points:

1) Burnley aren't in Europe, havent been for a long time and probably never will be again. Rovers will most likely be there again next year.

2)We are still in the League Cup my 6 fingered friend, your lot aren't.

3)The next time a Dingle player has his commitment questioned following an international call up for a "Major " nation (Not Albania etc - spiritual twin home of the inbreds) you may come on here and have bragging rights. Until then accept your place as the worst side in East Lancashire.

Debate over.

I can think of a few advantages to not been in europe.

1) save a bit of cash, i know tickets are only bout a tenner but if you think about it if we played at least 5 games thats fify quid saved ( a nite out )

2) no more sunday kickoffs ( apart from the spurs one but we are away anyhow )

3) More of our players will stay injury free (fingers crossed)

But the Hibbeg thing it comes on ere and lets face it bores the life out of anyone who reads his 'opinions'.

A serious question for you hibbeg:

What do you have to look forward to as a Burnley fan, i.e. what makes a good season for you?

Promotion? That’s not going to happen with the best will in the world. Winning a cup? Even the most optimistic of your fans is going to admit that’s extremely unlikely.

Let’s be honest a good season for you is staying in the division you are in, having a half decent cup run (fifth round of the fa cup if you’re really lucky), and getting a good result against Preston home and away. Bit sad really.

Since your season is over before it’s started, it seems a good season for you is Rovers not doing well in competitions they are serious contenders in. That seems a particularly sad thing to look forward to – if highlights of my season consisted of Burnley doing badly rather than Blackburn doing well then I’d be a seriously bitter football fan.

Personally I’m not that arsed about Burnley doing badly, in fact I’d like to see them get promotion. But that’s probably the difference of supporting a relatively big team and having a small team local rival, as opposed to supporting a small team and having a big team local rival I suppose.

Ok, first of all, I want hibbeg to prove that they were a greek pub team, which he keeps on stating?

Secondly, if we are, as you put it "Face it retard btards you're a disgrace" what does that make Burnley? if we are sitting 6th with a game in hand in the P R E M I E R S H I P and you are in the chumpionship after seven games without a win at 13th I think that speaks volumes in itself!

And the Bentley thing, together with your also poor European record is getting a bit boring now, when he plays for us fair enough..your blinkered attitude is up to you, but when he plays for England you should support him, but I don't think that will happen somehow because your a sheep lovin, dingle sh*ggin, cyber warrior, sitting at your pc day in day out in your y-fronts that havent been washed since the 80's dreaming of the dingles being in the top division.

hibbeg: "you have a superiority complex totally unjustified by your European failures"

Do you not think that our "superiority complex" is actually born out of the situation of us being in a league above you, are sixth in that league (as opposed to 13th in yours), consistently out perform you in all competitions which we mutually take part in, and we categorically hammer you in all our recent meetings? In which case our "superiority complex" is actually a teensie weensie bit justified don’t you think?

For example, I don’t think I’m being daft in saying that Blackburn are a far better side than Scunthorpe (who are actually above you in your league).

Any Rovers fans on here visiting the Burnley pages? Frankly I couldn't care less about the place or its football team. It's a sh*thole somewhere near Yorkshire with an irrelevant football team. All I need to know. End of. I wouldn't waste my time reading about their team nor give my opinions to their illiterate fans. Which makes you wonder why so many Burnley fans seem to spend time reading about Blackburn and boring us with their drivel. You might get the impression that they are more interested in Blackburn than Burnley. I can only guess that they are repressing their true feelings and are closet Blackburn fans. Isn't there some kind of program that can help these poor b*stards. Does anybody know of a safehouse - maybe we can smuggle them out of Burnley so that they can finally live in peace and express there true feelings of love for the Rovers?

I know I'm not the only Rovers fan that questioned the wisdom of entering the Intertoto and striving to get into the comparatively poorly rewarded UEFA Cup competition (even less money than the Chumpionship) and then concentrating on that competition to the detriment of the League campaign (Premier Leage that is). Notwithstanding the obvious dissapointment, I'm happy that we can now concentrate on success on 3 fronts rather than 4 (as opposed to Burnley's sole worry of maintaining their place in their inferior division). At least we only have to suffer the humiliation of being turned over by a 'pub team' once in a season, Burnley are looking to avoid that fate every time they play.

One positive of the summer European exertions is that we hit the ground running as evidenced by our position of sixth in the P R E M I E R S H I P with a game in hand.

Given the state of the Burnley midfield, the managerial genius that is Stevie Cotterill would love to have Savage, Bentley and even Mokoena to choose from. Seven games without a win and 13th in the division below us with only the prospect of more defeats to look forward to. Never mind, at least you'll get to wear your "European Quarter Finalists - 1961" shirt when Barnsley turn you over in your glamour tie at Oakwell this weekend.

1 and 3 are accurate. Number 2 is nonsense. You post biased opinions that often lack any logic whatsoever.

For instance, you cite our "European failures". You fail to realise that qualifying for Europe is an achievement that many Premiership clubs fail to match, despite having bigger attendances and more resources. You also seem to not have noticed how well we did last year, getting into the group stage and through it into the knockout competitions.

I rather think that if Burnley had qualified for Europe three times in the last five seasons, and on one occassion got past the group stages, you'd be crowing about their "awesome European record".

Blackburn are a credit to the north. The fact that we are still in the Premiership despite our meagre resources speaks of brilliant management both on and off the field.

We have players that are a credit to the shirt. People like Brad Friedel and Jason Roberts who devote their time to setting up academies and helping young players gain skills.

I'm sure if I tried hard enough I could find epic failures by Burnley and players who are complete tossers. However, I don't care enough.

The league positions speak for themselves. Rovers are a brilliant team. Burnley are nobodies.

Sorry, mate, but your logic is pitiful.

"despite our meagre resources" - 200 million legacy is hardly meagre.

I don't remember any other Premiership or otherwise teams being left that amount in the 90's - The fact is that your record stinks based on the amount of cash pumped into the club in the 90's. You should have achieved more and you failed in Europe - miserably

What you on about hibbeg £200m? Rovers have recouped more in the sale of players then they have ever spent e.g. Le Saux and Sutton to Chelsea, Shearer to Newcastle.

They only expenditure that can't immediately be recouped is the £30 million spent on the ground. But unlike Burnley, Rovers would never consider selling there home ground anyway.

When we we go to a home game we are watching Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool etc. who do you see? 2nd rate teams because that is who 2nd rate clubs play. "when us dingles grace the prem turf will be full"

The sad thing is that they actually believe this ****.

Mind you I suppose Burnley's planned domination of Europe has got to start somewhere, and there's a big glamour tie for them to look forward to at Oakwell this weekend.

Meanwhile there's a nice shiney Premiership trophy down at Ewood, Rovers being one of the select few high profile clubs to have won. I really enjoy seeing it every time I go to a match at Ewood.

Mind you, Burnley have got their 1961 European Quarter finalists pennant to look at, the one that they were given by the captain of the Hamburg team that beat them. On it, in barely legible writing because it is so old, the following words are printed: "Congratulations on getting through the one round you needed to get this far by beating that team nobody's ever heard of, but now it's time to wake up"
