Imitation is form of flattery

As satisfying as Saturday's victory over Sunderland was, the highlight of the weekend for me was the way Rovers brushed themselves off 48 hours later to record a stunning 4-4 draw with Aston Villa at White Hart Lane!

Of course I am jokingly referring to the 125th Anniversary of Tottenham Hotspur (125 years? Is that all!), where they wore a Blue and White Halved Kit to play against Villa in their Monday Night Fixture.

They say that imitation is a form of flattery and Spurs certainly reminded me of a less well-aged and slightly less attractive version of the World's Best Town Team that we all know and love.

Perhaps after continually being linked with our superior players in the (Southern biased) Press they felt this was the best way to jump on the Rovers revolution and get their season started!

But I am only half-joking when I say I think it is now time to get the World Famous Blue and White Halves placed under the same official protection as historical buildings and places of natural beauty.

We were donning our same strip years before most of the "big" clubs both in England and the rest of the world had even been dreamed up and we can't have the Johnny-Come-Lately Londoners or anyone else just hitching a lift on our rich history. Campaigners, lets get started!

Finally on a more serious note, Rovers have a huge game later this week as we attempt to overcome a 2 goal deficit in the UEFA Cup against Larissa.

Mark Hughes and other prominent members of the Club feel we have a real chance for Glory in Europe this year and it would be a real shame to fall at this early hurdle.

Tickets are at 1980's prices once again so hopefully everyone will contribute to a decent sized gate and help roar Rovers on to the Group Stages.

See you there!

Actually the commemorative kit Spurs wore was a similar kit to the one they wore in 1884. follow the link http://www.historica

Even as a Spurs supporter I enjoyed your article. Keep up the good work!!

and the 1884 kit was actually adopted in tribute to the Blackburn team of the time...

Tottenham had a multitude of different home colours in the early years before finally settling on white shirts, navy shorts and navy socks, in tribute to the PNE "Invincibles", who were the first team ever to win the double.

And Spurs always wear an all white kit in European competition as a tribute to the great Madrid team of the 50's and early 60's.

So our use of Blackburn's traditional colours for just one game (that kit will never be worn again) is, by comparison, a relatively small gesture.

Mr Salmon,
I applaud your honour, as a fellow blackburner, to clearly define the divide of the trend setting northerners to the somewhat thoughtless southerners.

Up the Rovers!
A great read again keep it up

the following is taken from spursforlife.com

The first recorded colours of Tottenham Hotspur are said to have been navy blue shirts with a scarlet shield on the left side of the jersey with the letter ‘H’ thereon. This was decided on at a meeting when the club was first put on an official basis prior to the start of the 1883-84 season. During its first season of 1882-83 it had been an ad hoc affair but Mr John Ripsher was its first President and Treasurer as from August 1883. At the end of the 1884-85 season, the club cancelled its last friendly of the season and went to the Oval to watch the FA Cup Final between Blackburn Rovers and Queen’s Park (Scotland). Blackburn Rovers won 2-0, the second of their three consecutive victories in the FA Cup Final. Spurs then adopted the Blackburn colours of blue and white half shirts but retained the letter ‘H’ on the shirt.

I dont care what the reason is for nicking our brand, the halves are ours, rip off another club!

I fully support the motion for government protection of our endearing image of true football tradition the blue n white halves!

Villa wore Claret and Blue on Monday - is this in tribute to the Dingles over the hill? Is that why they conceded 4 goals as well?

Mind you when they play teams in blue and white halves they usually let 5 in without reply!

A little from a Spurs perspective here ........

Firstly, we wre wearing that kit ourselves (among others) a long time ago, and secondly we changed it (also a long time ago) to our present colours. We changed because we were in awe at that time not of the clogging Rovers, but of PROUD PRESTON, a Lancashire team with a better pedigree than yours, and far more cause to trumpet their pedigree. Check out and compare your pasts .......

Well it certainly has come to something when our table propping friends have to resort to comparing our club with SOMEONE ELSES just to have a pop!

The oldest clubs are in the north so many southern teams used their colours. We only wore it for a year or two back then and we now play in White thanks to the better club near you called PNE. Oh, look at our trophy cabinet to yours - you know you're just a small club in L'shire!

Not surehow you interpret Rovers 3 league titles to Preston's 2, 6 FA cups to their 2 & 1 league cup to their none - as them having abetter pedigree than Rovers. Deluded, southern relegation scrappers should get their facts straight!

Your point is a bit thin when you consider Rovers, like Preston, are founder members of the football league and, unlike Preston, founder members of the Premier league, a boast Spurs are unable to make on either account. Rovers trophy haul compares well against PNE both during the early days of the league and certainly in recent times with Rovers taking the Premier League title and, may I remind you, the Worthington Cup when we saw off a Spurs team who then, like now, underestimated the Rovers. It's a long long time since Spurs won anything of any consequence, and on the evidence of current form,it will be a long time before they do.

Professor Plum and IAQTL, please explain how PNE are better than Rovers. The only thing that they've ever had that we haven't had is a plastic pitch!

I agree with paul totally on the issue of imatation. In the notion of kit and wanting to go further and bid for our players and speculate about obtaining two of our managers(souness and hughes).
For many a year the general spurs supporters mentality has been that they deserve to be a super power and a cup winning team.
I heard a spurs fan telling presenters on talksport in late july that with the players they have they could challenge for the league. Its not looking too good at the moment though,so we'll see how that goes! The "mighty" spurs(we havnt won a major trophy for fifteen years) wont finish above rovers this year and will not lure any of our star players down there. Our players know our grand history of the past and of today.
Winning the premiership is valued higher than the champions league by many managers most notably arsene wenger. Spurs have been no where near winning it but we have achieved that, finished second, fourth and sixth twice.
Spurs have mustered up a meagre two 5th places recently. Well done boys your a super power now!
A commentor above stated that spurs bench marked themselves on preston back in the 1800's. It seems like the imatation tactics have been ever present through all your history.
