STANLEY defender Mark Hughes has turned his attention to helping the Reds earn a first home win of the League One season after rescuing John Coleman's side a point at Blackpool with his last minute leveller.

The draw extended Stanley's unbeaten league run to four games and leaves the Reds eighth in the table, outside the top six on goal difference.

Seven of Accrington's eight points have come on the road with the two home games seeing an opening defeat to Gillingham before a 1-1 draw with Charlton earlier this month.

And Hughes, 31, is keen to transfer the away form to the Wham Stadium when Scunthorpe visit for what will be Stuart McCall's first game in charge of the Iron following his appointment this week.

“They have a new manager and usually, when clubs have a new manager, you have to be wary as it gives players a new lease of life and they have a point to prove," said Hughes.

“For us though, it’s about getting our first win at home. We have only lost one game at home in 2018 – Gillingham on the opening day – and then drew with Charlton.

“We know our home form is important and we want to carry on our momentum.

“I have found in this league, that any mistakes are punished a bit more – that’s the main difference from League One and League Two.”

Hughes headed home Sean McConville's corner at Blackpool on Saturday in the 93rd minute in front of the healthy away folllowing at Bloomfield Road to secure a 1-1 draw and admitted it felt like a winner.

“Any goal you score is special,” Hughes told Stanley's official website.

“It did feel like a winner at Blackpool and I think we deserved it.

“It’s always nice to score in front of your own fans as well!

“I must admit, it was getting late and I said to Connor Ripley to come up for the corner. Thankfully he didn’t hear me as I think he would have got in my way.

“But I do hang around the back post and sometimes it comes off.

“My most memorable goal for Accrington was the winner at Wycombe a couple of seasons ago but I have scored a couple of vital goals.

"For us at Blackpool it was important to keep the momentum going as we are four games unbeaten in the league.”
