Elliott Bennett welcomed a thoroughly deserved three points for Rovers as they chalked up a first win of the season at Hull City.

Bennett felt positives could be taken from their opening two draws but was pleased to see their dominance at the KCOM Stadium rewarded with three points.

Bradley Dack scored his fourth of the season, from Bennett’s cross, to decide a game which Rovers dominated for the majority.

They couldn’t find a second goal that their display merited, but the 29-year-old was happy to see the hard work pay off with a second successive clean sheet.

And he feels the momentum from last season’s promotion from League One can take them a long way on their Championship return.

“I think thoroughly deserved,” Bennett said of the victory.

“I thought it was a fantastic first-half performance and second half they put us under a bit of pressure, which we expected with them being the home team, but in the end David Raya pulls of a fantastic save off at the end and we’re thankful to get the three points.

“We were happy and felt across the 90 minutes we deserved it.

“We didn’t start well last year but this year we seem to have carried that bit of momentum through.

“The feeling within the group is really positive and the manager and coaching staff are driving us on every day in training.

“There’s a real togetherness within the group.”

Bennett missed an excellent chance to make it 2-0, one of a number of opportunities spurned by Rovers which would have made the game safe.

He added: “We had great chances. Second half I had a great chance, Arma, Danny (Graham) had a chance, then in the first half Bradley went one-on-one so could have had two.

“The game could have been done but the Championship is like that.

“That (performance) is what it takes to come away from home and get a clean sheet and we have players at the top end of the pitch who can score goals.

“We work really hard out of possession, the defending starts from the front no matter who is playing there.

“It means a lot to everyone, not just the back four, to keep a clean sheet is fantastic.”

Rovers had taken positives from their opening two matches, which brought two points, following draws with Ipswich and Millwall.

But Bennett was pleased Rovers were able to make their dominance pay in East Yorkshire, adding: “I thought we were really good at Ipswich on the opening day and should probably have beaten Millwall as well.

“You’re not going to win every game in the Championship, no-one does, but the three points are important.”

Bennett could have won a penalty for his side in the second half after being caught by Eric Lichaj in the box but opted to stay on his feet.

And he says if diving is to be clamped out in the game, the penalties need to be awarded in such instances.

“I’m stupid. I said to the ref afterwards, ‘if I go down there you give me a penalty’,” he said.

“I’ve tried to be honest and let him make the decision without me throwing myself to the floor and you don’t get it.

“They are trying to stamp out diving and people going down too easily but then the referee’s have to help you out in those situations I think.

“I will know for next time.”

Bennett was given a second booking for diving, when he appeared to have been fouled, in a 0-0 draw with Wigan in October 2017.

And he added: “We saw that last year at Wigan so I think that might have been in the back of my mind.

“I don’t need to be playing half an hour on a yellow card.

“I’m disappointed I didn’t get one but I’m sure over the course of the season it will even itself out and we will get one that we maybe shouldn’t have got.

“The main thing is the win and that’s all that matters.”
