HISTORY-MAKING midfielder Sean McConville is targeting plenty more goals this season after becoming the first Stanley player to score in League One.

The 29-year-old opened his account in style, netting twice in the weekend win at Bristol Rovers which brought the Reds' first goals and points in the third tier.

And McConville, who scored 13 times as John Coleman's side stormed to the League Two title last season, believes there is plenty more to follow.

“I always want to score more goals, the aim is always to get into double figures and I did that last season," he said. "I am striving every day to better myself, no matter which league we are in.

“It’s great to score but, for me, it was more important to win and send the fans home happy.”

The win pushed Stanley into 12th place in the early-season table ahead of tonight's Carabao Cup round one trip to Mansfield Town, and McConville, who was named in the EFL team of the week, was pleased with the Reds' character as they responded to an 83rd minute Bristol Rovers leveller to find a late winner.

“I am more pleased with the win and the manner of the win.

“It was reminiscent of Luton last season where we scored and then we conceded late on but we didn’t let our heads drop.

“Some teams would buckle and stick with 1-1, or even lose, but the mentality of the lads was unbelievable. We dug in and when it went to 1-1, we started creating even more chances and the goal came. It was great scenes at the end.”
