BURNLEY have confirmed the £15million signing of Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson.

The 25-year-old has signed a four-year deal at Turf Moor and the move was announced over the tannoy in the early stages of the Clarets' pre-season friendly with Espanyol.

The deal for Gibson matches the club record fee paid to Leeds United for Chris Wood a year ago and ends Sean Dyche's search for a centre back during this window.

He also becomes the first signing of the summer for Burnley, with England goalkeeper Joe Hart expected to follow on Monday in a £4million move from Manchester City.

Gibson could make his Clarets debut in the Europa League third qualifying round tie with Istanbul Basaksehir on Thursday night, with Burnley able to alter two of their registered squad with UEFA by 11pm on Wednesday night.
