ABERDEEN boss Derek McInnes insists his side are here to win as they seek to end Burnley's European run at the first stage.

The Clarets are back in Europe for the first time in 51 years this season but face a tense second qualifying round second leg tie against the Dons at Turf Moor on Thursday.

Sam Vokes' late goal earned Burnley a 1-1 draw at Pittodrie but the tie is very much alive ahead of the return leg.

McInnes and his squad visited Turf Moor on Wednesday and the Aberdeen boss expressed a quiet confidence about his side's chances in the Battle of Britain tie.

"We’ve not come down here thinking we want to be gallant losers and have people think we were better than they expected, the aim is to get through the tie," the 47-year-old said.

"We’ve got it all to do, we’ve got a tie to try and win. Winning here against a Premier League team on their own patch is a difficult task, but it’s one we think we can win."

Aberdeen have to score to have a chance of progressing after Vokes' away goal last week, but the Dons have far more European experience than Burnley and McInnes is aware how quickly games can change in second legs.

"In the second leg in Europe the dynamics can change quickly in the flow of the game, with who strikes first," he said.

"It’s important we try and strike first tomorrow, if we can do that. The game can ebb and flow, if Burnley score we still need to score, so it’s as we were.

"If you still need a goal after 60 minutes you need to force the issue, but I don’t think we need to force the issue from the first whistle."
