BURNLEY look set to miss out on Alfie Mawson with the defender expected to join Fulham from Swansea City.

The Clarets had been confident in bringing the 24-year-old to Turf Moor until late interest from the Premier League new boys who look set to pay in excess of £20million for the centre back.

West Ham had a longstanding interest in the former Barnsley man and Clarets boss Sean Dyche was an admirer but Mawson, who hails from the capital, has opted to return to London.

He is set to undergo a medical and finalise terms with the deal expected to be announced in the coming days.

Mawson was handed his first senior England call-up in March although he has yet to make his international debut.

Burnley remain keen to strengthen at the back with just Ben Mee, James Tarkowski and Kevin Long providing centre back cover.

The Clarets remain keen on West Brom's Craig Dawson but have so far been unable to tempt the Baggies into parting with the 28-year-old who is also said to be interesting Leicester City and Scottish champions Celtic.
