David Raya believes Rovers youngster Andrew Fisher has the talent to succeed at Ewood Park.

Fisher has featured in both of Rovers’ pre-season friendlies to date, starting the 1-1 draw at Port Vale on Saturday before being replaced by Raya on the hour mark.

The Spaniard has recovered from the knock which kept him out of the opening summer clash at Hibs and is set to start for Tony Mowbray’s side when Liverpool visit East Lancashire tomorrow night.

But Raya, who at 22 is only two years Fisher’s senior, has been impressed with what he has seen from the prospect who enjoyed a fine season for Rovers Under-23s last season, helping Damien Johnson’s side to the Premier League 2 Division Two title.

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph after the Vale Park draw, Raya said of his rival: “He is a brilliant goalkeeper, is still young and has great potential.

“I have known him for four or five years.

“If he carries on working as he is doing I think he has a good future.”

Fisher, as he did last summer, travelled with the first-team to their pre-season training camp in Austria last month.

He was beaten just 10 minutes into Saturday’s clash at League Two side Vale when Charlie Mulgrew looped a header over the stranded stopper.

But the keeper did not let the setback affect his performance and gave a steady display in Staffordshire, something that impressed the watching Raya.

“He was unlucky with the goal, it was just a misunderstanding,” said Raya.

“These goals happen, the main thing is that it happened in a pre-season game and not a league game and he showed good character after that.”

Raya, who made 47 appearances in all competitions last season, will start the Championship campaign as Rovers’ undisputed number one with Jayson Leutwiler and Fisher as competition.

The former missed the weekend game with a minor knock but should return to action against the Reds.

Rovers could yet strengthen their goalkeeping department ahead of the new season and send Fisher out on loan to gain more experience.

Despite his three appearances in the Checkatrade Trophy last season, he is still waiting to make his first league outing.

But Fisher is been given the chance to impress Mowbray in pre-season with other areas of the Rovers squad in more urgent need of attention in the transfer market.

Bristol City goalkeeper Frankie Fielding had been identified as a possible summer arrival in that department, but that chase now looks to be dead, with the 30-year-old having picked up an injury in the Robins’ pre-season friendly draw with Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.
