WHAT ABOUT STEPHEN WARD?

Clarets assistant Ian Woan came up with a unique way to decide who began in the middle for a game of rondo as one training session got underway at Fota Island.

The warm-up game made popular by Spain and Barcelona involves pinging a ball around in a circle while two players in the middle try and steal possession.

As one group got ready to go Woan turned to the watching youngsters in Cork and asked who their two favourite players were. 'Robbie Brady and Jeff Hendrick' came the reply, sending two of Burnley's Irish contingent into the middle.

'What about Stephen Ward?', asked Woan. 'He's third', the children shot back. You didn't need to ask who might have been fourth and fifth.

With five Republic of Ireland internationals in their squad Burnley are always a popular draw on this side of the Irish Sea, but it's Brady and Hendrick who are undoubtedly the top attractions.

MAN OF THE PEOPLE

This week in Cork has been a return to home territory for Kevin Long, who grew up 15 minutes from Fota Island. All his family still live in the city as do many of his childhood friends.

'He owns half of Cork', is the familiar refrain for Long, the local boy done good. He's certainly a well known character.

On Thursday a couple looking at Fota Island as a possible wedding venue were sat in the hotel lobby when Long strode through. 'Hello Kev', went the voice. 'Hello John, how are you?'. He knows everyone does Kev.

A DUNNE DAY

Jimmy Dunne scored his first Burnley goal in the win over Cork City at Turner's Cross and although it was a low-key pre-season friendly he still couldn't resist a clenched fist to mark the moment.

Lancashire Telegraph:

Dunne is the unknown Irishman in this squad, having won his first Republic of Ireland Under-21 cap only last season.

But it was a proud night for the Dunne family too, with his mum at the ground to see her boy score. It might only be a pre-season friendly, but it was still a special night for them.
