LANCASHIRE Lightning coach Glen Chapple believes his side can take confidence from their recent T20 Blast record - even though they have not made it out of the group since winning the competition three years ago.

Lancashire begin their campaign against Worcestershire Rapids at Old Trafford tonight (6.30pm) and Chapple is confident his side can have a good run at the trophy this time around.

He said: “Over the history of T20 cricket, we have a good record in terms of the number of games we have won, but we haven’t won the trophy as many times as we would have liked to.

“We need to attack the competition and we have the squad to feel confident.

“The players are stinging from not qualifying in the 50-over competition (where Lancashire were knocked out in the group). They did work hard and fell short, and that will spur them on in this competition.

“One area where we came unstuck in one-day cricket doesn’t really apply in T20.

“A couple of times we took more risks than were required to try and win the game, that doesn’t apply much in T20, it’s pretty much hell for leather.

“There are still decisions to be made. But our ability to clear the ropes with the bat, and our balance of bowling attack should stand us in good stead.”

Chapple also has faith in new skipper Liam Livingstone, who took over from Steven Croft at the start of the season, to take to captaining the side in the short format of the game.

He added: “Liam has taken to decision-making as captain brilliantly.

“The captain is challenged in T20 cricket, there is a lot going on on the day, especially if the game is televised too, but you still have to look after your own form too.

“He will have plenty of help from experienced players around him.”

Lancashire will start as favourites against a Worcestershire side have have finished second bottom in the North Group in each of the past two seasons.

The Rapids, semi-finalists in the One-Day Cup, have never reached Finals Day and will field ex-Lancashire overseas batsman Martin Guptill with Australian Callum Ferguson filling their other overseas slot.
