Tony Mowbray is ready to step up Rovers’ recruitment plans on his return from holiday with the Ewood boss keen to bring in up to five players before the end of the month.

Rovers are keen to extend the contracts of a number of their star names, including League One player of the year Bradley Dack, as well as add new faces to boost their squad.

Activity on the transfer and contract front is set to increase now Mowbray is back from his summer break as Rovers prepare for their Championship return.

Mowbray doesn’t foresee a huge overhaul of his squad and is targetting five permanent additions, supplement by loan signings, ahead of the 2018/19 season.

Rovers have 20 senior players under contract for next season and are keen to add new faces, as well as tie down out of contract pair Craig Conway and Danny Graham down to new deals.

Changes to the transfer window brought in for this season mean clubs have until August 9 to make permanent additions, while the loan window runs until August 31.

Rovers head to Austria for their pre-season training camp on June 24 with the Ewood chief hoping to have the majority of his squad in place by then.

Recruitment work is already ongoing, with potential Premier League loan targets discussed prior to Mowbray’s break.

But the Ewood boss is keen to meet face-to-face with prospective signings before giving the go ahead to any deals.

He hopes a newly structured recruitment department will start to bear fruit for Rovers, with their budget plans having been finalised when the club’s hierarchy travelled to India to meet owners Venky’s last month.

Last season’s squad are set to be given the chance to prove their worth in the second tier, with the club set to reward a number of them with new deals.

Meanwhile, Peterborough winger Gwion Edwards, a name who has been mentioned in dispatches as a Rovers transfer target, is not a player Mowbray is currently tracking.

The 25-year-old impressed in both games against Rovers in 2017/18, including an excellent display in the opening 45 minutes at Ewood Park in April.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony, interacting with fans on social media on Monday, stated that his club had accepted a seven figure bid for an unnamed player from a higher division club.

That led to speculation that Edwards, into the final year of his deal at the ABAX Stadium, could be the player in question but it was revealed to be Posh midfielder Leo Da Silva Lopes who joined Wigan on a four-year deal.

And the Lancashire Telegraph understands there is no interest from Rovers in the Welshman at this time.

Rovers will need to add to their attacking options in this transfer window following the departures of loanees Adam Armstrong, Jack Payne, Marcus Antonsson and Harry Chapman. The quartet contributed 19 goals between them last season and leave a gap in the attack.
