Adam Armstrong has been singled out for praise by England Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd after an excellent start to life at that level.

The former Rovers loanee, who netted nine times during his five month stay at Ewood Park, has a goal and an assist to his name in his first two outings for the Under-21s.

He will look to add to that tomorrow (6.30pm) when England face Scotland in the last four of the Toulon tournament.

Armstrong was called up instead of more senior figures at that level, including Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke and Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

England are chasing a third straight success at this tournament, with Boothroyd pleased with the impact of Amrstrong who himself credits his time at Rovers for earning him a first call-up to the Under-21s.

He helped the Under-20s to glory last summer and could be key to their hopes this time around.

“He has found his pathway blocked at this level, but when I called him to ask him to come and play here, he could not have been more enthusiastic,” Boothroyd said.

“It has probably been frustrating for him, not getting picked for squads, but he has come in and done brilliantly.

“He has probably been our best player at the tournament and I cannot speak highly enough of him.

“We’ve got a number of new players who have emerged at this tournament and they will be putting pressure on the more established names in the squad, and that is precisely what we want.”
