Rovers defender Derrick Williams is a doubt for Republic of Ireland's friendly with USA on Saturday.

The 25-year-old sat out training on Thursday as Martin O'Neill's side prepare for their second friendly of the week.

Williams impressed in Monday's defeat to France, earning his first senior cap in the 2-0 defeat.

The full-back stuck to his task well against an impressive French outfit as he marked PSG wonderkid Kylian Mbappe before being replaced with eight minutes to go in the Stade de France.

However, his chances of adding to his first cap are in doubt after missing training with a groin injury.

Williams saw his ever-present record in the league last season end when he missed the penultimate game of the season at Charlton with a similar injury.

Another Rovers defender Darragh Lenihan, will hope the friendly provides him with a chance of making his senior debut for his country.

The 24-year-old, capped at youth level was an unused substitute in the France defeat, as he was in March when they were beaten by Turkey.

Ireland host USA in Dublin as preparation for their Euro Nations League campaign which starts in September.

Boss O'Neill is also sweating on the fitness of Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter who is struggling with a thigh injury.

But experienced defender John O'Shea, who will feature for the final time in an Ireland shirt, and Jeff Hendrick, have returned to training after not being involved against France.
