Tony Mowbray says both Darragh Lenihan and Derrick Williams were deserving of their international call-ups.

The Rovers defensive duo were named in Martin O’Neill’s squad for the upcoming friendlies with France on Monday and then USA next Saturday.

They both featured in the Ireland side which took on a Celtic XI as part of Scott Brown’s testimonial on May 20 but are still to win their first senior caps for their country.

It is the second time they have been named in a national squad, having been unused substitutes in the March defeat in Turkey.

Williams played all but one game last season for Rovers and has been a virtual ever present since Mowbray took charge in February 2017, while Lenihan was a regular after his return from injury in February.

And with their possible involvement for their country in the coming week, Mowbray admits that may be factored in the pair’s pre-season programmes.

He told the club website: “I’m delighted. I spoke to Darragh, he was excited to have played at Celtic Park in Scott Brown’s testimonial.

“I’m delighted for any player who plays at international level and it’s great that they’ve been recognised after a successful season at Rovers.

“They’ve got to stay fit over the summer and might get some extra time off to make sure they’re psychologically ready for the new season, but I’m delighted for them.

“To make that breakthrough at international level is fantastic and we’re delighted and proud to have players playing for their countries.”
