Adam Armstrong has received his first England Under-21 call-up after being named in Ady Boothroyd’s squad for the Toulon Tournament following his fine form at Rovers.

Armstrong scored nine times for Rovers in the second half of last season after joining from Newcastle United.

He helped England to win the Under-20s World Cup last summer and the Under-21s will be looking to win the Toulon title for a third successive year, following victories in 2016 and 2017.

Armstrong marked his 21st birthday with his first goal in Rovers colours against Oldham in February and scored eight more times.

He will hope for game-time in the tournament which takes place between May 26 and June 9.

England have been drawn alongside China, Mexico and Qatar in Group A in the 12-man tournament.

Armstrong is one of a number of players to receive their first call-ups and Boothroyd is happy to be providing them with the experience.

He said: “The Toulon Tournament is one that we are all looking forward to and we’ll be playing some really good and tough global opposition.

“As the tournament rules only allow players born in 1997 and younger, it means that we have the chance to look at some of our players from the U20s and see how they develop in this group.

“Everything we do is focused on next summer’s Euros and qualification, so we will use our time in France to look at different systems and use players in different positions. It is also a great chance to replicate a major tournament environment and schedule.

“Ultimately we want to win every game and will be looking for that from the squad on and off the pitch.”
