BURNLEY goalkeeper Nick Pope has been named in England's 23-man squad for the World Cup, while Tom Heaton and James Tarkowski are on the standby list.

Pope has enjoyed a meteoric rise with the Clarets this season and has capped a memorable year with a place on the plane to Russia, the first Burnley player to be in a Three Lions World Cup squad since John Connelly in 1962.

England boss Gareth Southgate's decision to jettison Joe Hart from the squad means Pope takes his place as one of three goalkeepers, alongside Jordan Pickford and Jack Butland, but it has also had a knock-on effect for Heaton, who has been placed on standby ahead of Hart.

Centre back Tarkowski is also on standby for the tournament, having won his first cap in the March friendly against Italy, with Southgate opting for Gary Cahill, Phil Jones, John Stones and Harry Maguire as his central defenders, while Kyle Walker and Eric Dier provide cover in the heart of defence.

Pope hadn't played a minute of Premier League football until September 10 when he replaced the injured Heaton during Burnley’s win over Crystal Palace, but his form meant he kept his place once Heaton returned from injury. The 26-year-old then earned a first international call-up for the March internationals, although he didn't feature against Holland or Italy.

Heaton's dislocated shoulder injury looked to have wrecked his own World Cup ambitions, but despite not playing a competitive game since September, he is on standby for the tournament.

England have World Cup warm-up friendlies against Nigeria at Wembley on Saturday, June 2 and Costa Rica at Elland Road on Thursday, June 7.

Southgate’s men get their campaign underway against Tunisia on Monday, June 18 before playing Panama on Sunday, June 24 and Belgium on Thursday, June 28.
