Tony Mowbray admits there is plenty to consider when discussing new deals for Rovers’ out of contract players.

Craig Conway and Danny Graham head the list of senior figures whose deals expire this summer, though the latter does have a year’s option in the club’s favour.

Mowbray admits promotion being secured does provide him with the chance to meet with the players, and club executives, to discuss player contracts.

But with the players having taken wage cuts following relegation last term, Mowbray says plenty will need to be taken into account.

“We have been down in League One, they were Championship players last year so just about everyone at this club their salary shrunk this year,” the boss said. “Does that mean it bounces back to exactly where it was the previous year? Not if you’re out of contract it doesn’t.

“You’re a year, 18 months, further on, particularly if you’re getting into your 30s.

“There are lots of questions so you have to structure things but I am hopeful and confident that agreements can be made with the players we would like to keep, have done well for the club, are good human beings and know that tough decisions have to be made as a manager at times but want to come and here the logic.

“Craig is an example. He hasn’t played as much as he probably would have liked in the last few months but he’s not sulked, stomping about, he’s getting down and working hard in training every day and then when an opportunity comes to play he’s done exceptionally well for us.

“That’s’ what I like to see, hardworking honest professionals getting on with the job, leading the way, showing young players how to behave even if they are not playing themselves.

“As long as they are professional enough to come in to my office, chat man to man, that’s what I like and I’m sure we’ll come to the right decision for both the players and the club.”

Other players out of contract include Liam Feeney and Elliott Ward, both currently out on loan at Cardiff and MK Dons respectively, with the duo expected to depart.

Graham has spoken of his desire to remain at Ewood Park and is confident between the two parties can be struck.

The likes of Bradley Dack, Richie Smallwood and Darragh Lenihan will be among those under consideration for improved deals after helping Rovers to promotion back to the Championship.

No decision has been taken over Conway’s future as yet with talks set to take place. The Scot has been with the club since 2014 and is a popular figure with both the fans and in the dressing room.

Mowbray added: “First and foremost as a club know we know where we are then I need to sit down with our executives and have those discussions.

“What I do know is that the few players that it would be really pertinent that are coming out of contract I have tried to allay any fears.

“I have let them know my thoughts, but until we had those executive meetings, where are we going? What are the salary levels? Is player A a definite starter, where do you picture him in your squad, do you incentivise his contract? There are lots of discussions to be had about how contracts are put together.

“Before the players leave (for the summer) I will have spoken to them, then we will engage with their advisors and try and make their summer more relaxed.”
