Charlie Mulgrew revealed the possibility of picking up a second yellow card prevented him from over-celebrating his winning goal that sent Rovers back into the Championship.

Mulgrew headed in a Bradley Dack corner with 10 minutes to play to give Rovers a 1-0 win which secured promotion.

While admitting his winner left him ‘honoured, humble and thankful’, he admitted he didn’t want to celebrate too much and risk a second booking having been carded for a foul in the early stages of the second half.

“I can’t remember the last time I had such a feeling like that when I scored,” said the Rovers skipper.

“I’m so honoured, humble and thankful.

“It was a great ball in from Dacky, I think it’s skimmed (Jack) Payne’s fringe and I thought my header was over the bar, but when I looked it was in the net!

“I am over the moon, it’s unbelievable. I didn’t know where to go after I scored or what to do and I didn’t want to pick up another booking thanks to the celebrations.

“I really wanted to run in amongst it all but I knew we had some time to go so decided against it!”

The three points mean Rovers can’t be caught by rivals Shrewsbury Town and cut the gap to leaders Wigan to a solitary point after the Latics were held to a 1-1 draw at Bristol Rovers.

Paul Cook’s side have a superior goal difference heading into the last two games of the season but that won’t stop Mulgrew, and Rovers, trying to hunt them down as they prepare to visit Charlton on Saturday before a final home game against Oxford United on May 5.

“We’ll keep fighting,” added the Ewood skipper. “It’s Wigan’s title to lose but we’ll keep battling away and keep doing our job.

“The fans have been unbelievable but they’ve been like that all season, stuck with us and when they get behind us they can almost suck the ball into the net, just like they did (at Doncaster).”
