This Rovers side have answered most questions which have been asked of them so far this season.

The final one remains as to whether they can overhaul Wigan Athletic in the remaining two matches and secure the League One title which would cap a truly remarkable season.

Despite promotion being a certainty, the feeling at Ewood is that Rovers are eager to ensure they finish the season with a run of one defeat in 35 games, a record they would rightly be proud of.

On Tuesday night in the pouring rain at Doncaster, they came up with the winning goal 10 minutes from time to secure a place in the Championship.

That was just at the moment some fans may have been thinking that the champagne would have to remain on ice after news of Shrewsbury coming from behind to lead against Peterborough began to filter through to the away end.

That meant Rovers needed a victory of their own to seal the deal at the earliest opportunity, not that the players would have know. Either way, they did not want to rely on matters elsewhere.

Once again it was one of Rovers’ big-game players who came to the fore.

Skipper Charlie Mulgrew headed in an incredible 14th goal of the season to spark jubilant scenes in the away end.

A top two place was secure.

Heading into this campaign there was pressure on Tony Mowbray and his players as a big fish in the third tier pond.

Anything but promotion would have been seen as failure.

After four defeats in their opening 11 games, Rovers dispelled any possible doubts by embarking on an unbeaten run of 18 matches which catapulted them in to automatic promotion contention.

Defeat at Plymouth in February raised the question of how they would respond. They have since gone 14 without defeat.

No team in the EFL has lost fewer games this season than Rovers and the club records are continuing to be shattered by this team.

That is why they deserve the most fitting of send-offs when they host Oxford at Ewood Park on Saturday week.

The club have done their bit, with tickets reduced to £10 for adults.

The players have more than done theirs with this superb run.

And now it’s the turn of the town to get behind this side and join in the celebrations. You certainly deserve it.
