Elliott Bennett admits Rovers are ‘so close’ to achieving their promotion aim and praised the character of the dressing room having not ‘wilted’ after a disappointing start to the season.

Rovers can secure promotion back to the Championship at Doncaster tomorrow night and need just two points from their final three games to make it a short stay in League One.

Victory over Peterborough United last Thursday, coupled with Shrewsbury Town dropping points at home to Bury on Saturday, leaves Rovers within touching distance of the Championship.

Rovers haven’t had it all their own way this season, losing their opening two matches and four of their first 11. But with just one defeat in their next 32 games, their fate is in their own hands.

“The kit man actually said to me before the game (against Peterborough) we’ve been under pressure since the start of the season because everyone expected Blackburn Rovers to be up there,” Bennett said.

“We lost the first two games, we could have wilted, but we haven’t, we kicked on from then and the character in the dressing room is massive.

“We knew we had a big job on our hands but the character within the dressing room can never be questioned.

“We just want to win games and are so close to what we want to achieved.

“There’s still work to do but it was massive three points.”

The top three sides have had to deal with a staggered structure of fixtures of late. They haven’t kicked off at the same time since March 10, something which will change on Tuesday when Wigan, along with Rovers and Shrewsbury, are all in action.

On the staggered schedule, Bennett said: “I don’t know about difficult, we want to win every game whatever day we play.

“We just want to win, do our job and then you come in and look at their results.

“The fact we can watch them play, and they can see how we get on, I think it makes it more interesting for the supporters and the league.

“We can only ever control our own destiny and we did that.”

Rovers had to rely on a second half comeback as they turned a 1-0 deficit in to a 3-1 win against Posh.

Boss Tony Mowbray revealed it was the players who did much of the talking in the dressing room at half-time after a below-par opening 45 minutes.

And 29-year-old Bennett added: “Listen, the manager sets us up and does his work with us all week.

“He tells us what he expects of us and lets us manage the team and when he needs say what he needs to say then he says it.

“Most of the time he leaves it to the players to manage the group.

“Some managers would have come in and gone crazy at half-time, he didn’t, was calm, let us have our say and then told us what we needed to do in the second half to put it right.”

League One player of the year Bradley Dack struck twice in the second half to set Rovers on their way and has enjoyed a superb debut season at Ewood Park.

“When Dacky’s on song he does what he does,” Bennett said.

“Him and Danny (Graham) are two massive players for us and we’re happy we’ve got them in the team.

“Hopefully they can score a few more goals for us and we get the job done.”
