Wigan boss Paul Cook couldn't help taking a little dig at Rovers after his side secured promotion back to the Championship after a 4-0 victory at Fleetwood.

Rovers held a six point advantage over the Latics in March, albeit having played four games more.

And after seeing his side secure promotion with three games to spare, Cook said: “Blackburn got a little bit ahead of themselves when we had games in hand with some things said about us becoming fatigued, but we haven’t.

“We’re the first team to be promoted and we got to the quarter-final of the FA Cup. I wish Blackburn and Shrewsbury, with a special mention to them, well.

“We’re very grounded as a staff. It’s a long journey in football and it is a great day.”

Wigan hold a three point advantage over Rovers, with a better goal difference, going in to the final three games of the season.

They will be looking to achieve the league title they won in 2015/16 and can finish on 102 points should they win their remaining matches and Cook added: “The record speaks for itself; clean sheets, goals, wins and the best teams in the league finish at the top.

“I’m so proud of the players. We might be a good fit now but football changes - my time at Portsmouth showed that when we were happy - and then it all changed.

“I’m going to enjoy tonight and it’s great when you’ve managed or played for a club and you lead them to promotion, you’ll always have a place in their heart.”

Elswhere in League One, Shrewsbury were held to a 1-1 draw by already relegated Bury, meaning a win for Rovers at Doncaster on Tuesday would see them promoted alongside Wigan.

Rotherham secured their play-off spot with a 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers, while Charlton and Scunthorpe occupy the other two spots after wins over Portsmouth and Walsall respectively.

Northampton boosted their hopes of survival, with a win over Plymouth, denting their top six hopes in the process.

Rochdale missed the chance to move out of the bottom four after a last minute equaliser for Bradford saw them draw 1-1.

Struggling AFC Wimbledon and Oldham shared a 2-2 draw, while MK Dons are as good as down after a 4-0 thumping at Southend.
