Rovers Under-23s couldn't secure the point they needed to win the Premier League 2 Division Two title as they were beaten 1-0 by Aston Villa.
Damien Johnson's men toiled hard but were ultimately left disappointed as Jordan Lyden's goal in first-half stoppage time proved decisive.
All is not lost for the Rovers youngsters however, with three points against West Brom next Monday enough to win promotion, no matter how Villa fare in their remaining two matches.
