Corry Evans has suffered another injury blow after Tony Mowbray revealed the Rovers midfielder picked up a tight hamstring.

The Northern Ireland international was forced off at half-time in the 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers in what was his fifth consecutive start alongside Richie Smallwood.

Evans had completed 90 minutes once in 2018 prior to this run in which he completed the full game on four occasions.

However, that came to an end at the Memorial Stadium as the 27-year-old suffered with a tight hamstring, the third Rovers player within the last month to struggle with that problem.

He is a doubt for the game with Peterborough United on Thursday, with Mowbray disappointed for Evans, believing the two long journeys within the last week to have not been helpful.

“A tight hamstring,” he said of Evans’ substitution.

“We’ve tried not to make an issue of it but we had huge travel problems I would have to say.

“I didn’t get home personally until 5.30am on Wednesday morning coming back from Gillingham and I know some of the players were the same as me.

“We had to sit on a bus for five hours coming here (Bristol). You don’t want to make excuses of fatigue in the game because I think we showed coped well.

“But when your hamstrings are tights that’s a result of sitting around, waiting about, and it’s a shame because Corry has been one of our best players over the last month or so. He has done exceptionally well.”

Evans was replaced at half-time of Saturday’s 1-1 draw by Paul Downing. That brought about positional switches, with Elliott Bennett moved from right-back to central midfield and Darragh Lenihan to right-back from central defence.

Ryan Nyambe, Rovers’ usual incumbent at right-back is currently out with a hamstring injury of his own, picked up in the Blackpool win last month.

The 20-year-old, who has made 34 appearances this season, is working with the club’s sports scientists, but Mowbray revealed the Namibian-born youngster is yet to take part in full training.

He said: “Ryan is getting closer every day but he’s not close enough yet.”
