ROBERT Holmes says he’s taking plenty of positives from a week at the English Alpine Championships that saw him collect two gold medals.

The 15-year-old alpine star finished sixth in the giant slalom on day five of the Championships that are taking place in Bormio, Italy, but had already won both Super G events earlier in the week.

The Nelson teenager, who attends Park High School, was also going extremely well in the slalom, sponsored by Rossignol, on Wednesday but unfortunately wasn’t able to finish his run.

“The GS was a little bit disappointing because I wasn’t technically good enough on the steeps and I just left myself a little bit too much work to do on the flats,” said the Team Evolution racer.

“It wasn’t really my best skiing but the Super G earlier in the week makes up for it anyway.

“I was flying in the slalom too, I was probably on one of the best runs I’ve done this season, if not ever, and I was coming on to the last steep and my outside ski went away from me, I couldn’t recover it.

“I’m disappointed but watching my video through I can take a lot of positives from the skiing before that.

“In the Super G I know I’m quick enough now and in the slalom I can’t really learn a lot because I’m usually very consistent, it’s the first time I’ve skied out, I was on the limit and I pushed a bit too hard.”

And now that competition has finished this week for Holmes, who trains at Pendle Ski Club alongside Olympian Dave Ryding, he’s looking forward to competing at the British Championships in Tignes in March, as long as he gets his school work done.

“Hopefully I’m going back out to Tignes with two weeks training before,” he added. “It does depend on my GCSE mocks though and if I do well in them! I’m on track I think so it’ll be alright!”

Holmes, who has been skiing since he was a toddler, is aiming to one day compete in the World Cup.

“Hopefully in the mid-term I’d like to go to the junior world championships and then when I’m older I’d really like to go to a World Cup.”
