STEVEN Defour insists there is no panic over Burnley’s recent lack of goals and he’s confident the tide will soon turn.

The Clarets have scored just 19 times in 24 Premier League games this season and only three in their last seven winless games, firing blanks in five of them.

They hit the net away at Manchester United (twice) and at home to Liverpool, but the Clarets have failed to score at Brighton & Hove Albion, Huddersfield Town and Crystal Palace as well as being shut out at Turf Moor by Tottenham and United.

But Defour believes the drought is down to a lack of luck rather than any long-term trend and he highlighted opportunities that fell Burnley’s way on Saturday to back that up.

“It’s not quite falling for us,” the Belgian midfielder said. “Johann’s free kick is on the bar, at some point Tarky couldn’t quite get his foot on it. It’s little things where in the first half of the season they may have gone in. It’s not falling but we still have to work.”

Defour and Gudmundsson are the chief creators for the Clarets in Robbie Brady’s absence and the latter insists the chances are still coming despite the diminishing return.

And the two-goal haul at Old Trafford, which included a memorable Defour free-kick, is proof to the former Anderlecht man that the Clarets can trouble the scorers on a regular basis this season.

“We are creating things but the ball is not falling quite right at the moment,” the 29-year-old said.

“We scored twice at United which not every team is capable of doing so we just have to keep working and wait for that ball to fall for us. We’ve always been a team that haven’t scored many goals so we just need to keep going.”

Burnley’s recent woes in front of goal meant they were unable to turn their territory against United into points on Saturday.

But Defour insists confidence remains high.

“We have the feeling that we should have got something from this game, but we didn’t,” he added.

“We know we played a good game so we’ll just have to continue to work hard.

“The margins are very tight. We’re playing good games, we’re not playing really bad. Maybe just the first half at Crystal Palace wasn’t as good. We’re still in a good position so we’ll just have to continue to work like we do and at some point we’ll win.

“We’ve played again with confidence, we’ve just gone up against Manchester United. They’re a strong team and second in the league.

“We were unfortunate. I think we played a good game. I don’t think United had too many golden opportunities when hitting us on the counter attack. We had some chances in the second half to score a goal.”
