EAST Lancashire's Sam Murray is among an 11-strong squad for the opening modern pentathlon international of the year.

The Clitheroe ace, who won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics in London, heads the women's team for the event in Hungary.

Murray, 28, will travel to Budapest in high spirits after winning the National Ranking Competition in Bath earlier this month.

She is joined in the women's squad by Jessica Varley, Joanna Muir, Kerenza Bryson, Charlie Follett and Georgia Hannam.

Murray will compete in women's qualifying on Thursday aiming to earn a place in Saturday's final.

The men's team includes Olympian Jamie Cooke along with Sam Curry, Tom Toolis, Jamie Harper and Bradley Sutton.

The competition marks the start of a long 2018 season with this year’s World Championships not taking place until September.

The event marks the beginning of a new campaign with a strong international field entered. It offers the opportunity for athletes to lay down a marker for the season ahead with nobody seeing competition action since October’s Champion of Champions in Doha.
