DERRICK Williams was pleased to see Rovers get back to their resilient best as they ground out a sixth consecutive win against Charlton Athletic at Ewood Park.

Rovers had shipped seven goals in their previous four league games but claimed a first clean sheet in six matches to keep up the pressure on the top two.

Williams was part of a defensive unit which was forced in to plenty of work in a second half in which the visitors dominated and the full-back said concentration levels had to be high throughout.

But the Irishman always felt confident that Rovers could hold on to their one goal advantage before Danny Graham made the game safe in injury time.

“You’ve just got to stay concentrated, stay focussed, we’d done it really well, I never felt like they were about to score, tried to stay positive and try to stay clear minded,” Williams said.

“We’ve conceded a few too many the last few games, we want to try and get more clean sheets, we worked hard for it and just got to do that every week.

“I think first half we really put them on their toes and we should have went in 2-0 at half-time.

“We let them have a chance to get back in which wasn’t the best and they had a lot of possession in the second half, we were just defending really, fair play to everyone in the team we worked really hard and did well to keep them out.

“They’re a good team, good individual players, always a threat when they get the ball, so we're happy with a clean sheet.”

Rovers led at the break courtesy of a Leon Best own goal but they went in ahead only after an excellent David Raya save to deny Ben Reeves.

The Spaniard also made a flying stop after the break, also to deny Reeves, as well as claiming a number of crosses with excellent handling.

And on the ‘keepers’ saves, Williams added: “Especially the one in the first half, I think he kind of guessed a bit but he guessed the right way.

“He was quality, he was really good, he took a lot of pressure off us, couple of crosses I couldn’t believe he got up that high.”

Rovers’ sixth consecutive league wins also came on Williams’ 200th senior career appearance.

It was number 68 in a Rovers shirt since his move from Bristol City last summer and while happy to reach the milestone he admits he should have marked it with a goal having missed a great opportunity to make it 2-0 shortly before the break.

He added: “I didn’t know it was my 200th, I'm happy with that, happy to be racking up the games, and delighted with the three points.

“I should’ve had a goal as well I think, probably worse miss you’ll see. We battled hard and it was a good result.”
