Hughes in striker pursuit

BLACKBURN boss Mark Hughes has stepped up his hunt for a new striker.

The Rovers chief wants a new forward on board before the transfer window slams shut next month, and Telegraph Sport can reveal that talks have begun with a number of different parties, although the club have yet to make a formal bid for any of their main targets.

Chairman John Williams said today: "We've stepped up the hunt this week and it's possible we might be able to do something.

"We are in more detailed discussions with various parties, but we haven't cracked it just yet."

It is believed that Hughes is currently pursuing a number of different options, including Bayern Munich's £4.5m-rated hitman Roque Santa Cruz and Everton's James Beattie.

However, two further mystery' targets are also in the frame, so a number of different scenarios could yet unfold, depending on the outcome of talks over the next few days.

Ideally, Hughes would like to have a new face in the squad before the season starts on August 11, and there is even a chance something could happen in the next seven days.

Santa Cruz's agent Jan Van Baal claims Rovers have already made a concrete offer for his client, but Porto and Real Zaragoza are also thought to be chasing the striker as well.

"He will sign for a new club within two or three days. We are negotiating with three clubs in Europe," said van Baal.

"There are two concrete offers, one from Blackburn and one from Southern Europe but he is keeping his options open."

One of the mystery targets could be Belgian striker Luigi Pieroni of Nantes according to certain tabloids.

Agree with Sophie - having another proven striker on board will be a real boost...plus Santa Cruz looked sharp in the Copa America.

Proven striker!!! One swallow does not make a summer, he is, at best 5 goals a season. Dicov had a better rate than this. I say now the deal with Mido has gone through lets get him in. Appreciate what happened last time but you can't deny his record season before last, he had a similar impact as Berbatov. He is strong, a poacher and would compliment what we already have and if anyone can manage him it's Sparky.

Wonder if Alan Smith is one on the other unnamed strikers? He would give us so much more, perfect for Rovers imo, if we can get him at the right price! (Looks like it would be around 6 million)

The thing is Oracle, Mido's got a weight problem on a similar scale to Beattie!

Yeah, cos they came flooding back for Nonda, once a £15m player for Monaco! This guy is fourth choice at Bayern, he has never got above 5 goals a season. Look at his details on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.

_Cruz
Hope we have planning permission to extend the ground to at least 40,000 if we get him.

The entire team had a weight problem when Sparky took over after Souness had left with his pie and chips regime. He soon got them into shape and firing.

In truth, my only concern about Mido is whether his heart would be in it, if it was then I could think of none better at a cheap price.

Col, Falkirk says...

I agree with P3te Alan Smith would be my call too. Maybe not as gifted as some but a definate all rounder who could lead the line with his work ethic and versatile enough to play midfield or out on the wings. Think he would have something to prove also so would have the hunger to play for the shirt.

Does no one else think that Defoe could be one of these 'mystery' striker targets? In my opinion he would be a superb addition as he is a natural goalscorer, always has been. Just about the opposite of Santa Cruz! Defoe is about 3/4th choice now at Spurs so perhaps he would relish the chance to be playing every week with us? I think the guy is quality, just hope the fee wouldn't be a problem. I reckon he is worth around £10m which may make it a little tricky to say the least but if we could pull out all the stops i reckon he'd we worth it.

Any thoughts guys?

Defoe would be quality but unless any takeover goes through soon, we won't be able to afford the £10m fee or his wages. Anyone but Beattie!

Thankfully, rovers fans who know football. Smithy may be a shout but heard he was a done deal for Boro, Lua Lua would be someone to look at, good striker. Defoe, I would like, pace and an eye for goal, always in Owen and now Rooney's shadow but a clas act. £10m would be about 4m above budget I reckon.

I just plucked £10m out of no where to be honest but i can't see Spurs accepting £6m for him. Plus if he was available i can imagine the usual vultures with their pockets of cash will be waiting (most likely Redknapp as he has a good relationship). However if i could hand pick one player for us it would be Defoe.

Talking of Grabbi, anyone see the Rovers doubleheader on ESPN classic last night? 7-1 battering of West Ham and 3-3 at Highbury. Think they were both around 2001/02. Grabbi was superb against Hammers and Dunny was superb in both the games. If he can regain some of that fitness i reckon he could be a BIG player for us this coming season.

COME ON HUGHESY, GET US DEFOE!

It's best that our budget is kept under wraps - that way clubs won't hike their prices up if they know how much cash we've got to splash. That was why we didn't get Benni sooner - coz Porto heard Chelski were interested and so put the price up. Keep the faith - Sparky will spend the cash wisely!!

I'd prefer Santa Cruz anyday of the week, you don't get to play for Bayern if you're rubbish and after being pushed down the order after injuries he's got an awful lot to prove..Santa Cruz and McCarthy could be the new SAS--SCAM

So your basis for signing a player is that if he's good enough for Bayern he's good enough for ickle Rovers? Lets just say i'm mighty glad you don't hold any position of power over Blackburn's transfer targets!

I suspect that you right about Defoe, although it's a shame as i think the deal would have worked out perfectly for everyone.

Mido can't get in for Berbatov, and the fact he fell out with Jol. Season before he scored 11 in 27 (Nearly 1 in 2). Santa Cruz has a 1 in 5 record in the GERMAN league!!

Yes, I agree he messed us about but don't let your heart rule your head. If he improves the team, which he would, then we should buy. Santa Cruz will cost us the same!!

Zamora is a shout I agree with that but Santa Cruz and Beattie - No Nay Never!

I'm with you on that Tommo, Appiah would be a quality addition to the midfied. Alan Smith looks like the best name being banded around today (apart from the highly unlikely Defoe). Smith has the drive and aggression we need to partner the skilled but less motivated Benni. I have complete faith in Sparky. He wont sight Meaty Beatie.

Tim, York says...
2:29pm Thu 26 Jul 07

Just a quick thought about Santa Cruz - agree his stats don't look great but we are not playing Championship Manager here and do we all remember a certain fourth choice centre back for hertha berlin called Chris Samba who was deemed not good enough for them. As a striker himself, hughes will know whether Santa Cruz is good enough and how much he can help him - in Sparky I trust. PS Personally wouldn't want Mido anywhere near the team, esp at £6 million.

What are you on about Tim? What 'Champ Manager' stats were you refering too in relation to Samba? Strikers on the other hand are judged on GOALS!!! Yes thats right, STATS!

And how can you compare a young centre half who had played about 20 professional games EVER to a regonised international striker who has played nearer 200? I think its fair to say that the world has a better idea of who santa cruz is as a footballer than Samba?!

Given a straight choice i'd take Mido over Santa Cruz everytime coz i have a better idea of what we'd be getting. The guy has an attitude problem sure but so did Bellamy and he did ok while he was with us. At £6m thou, no chance. I'd say he was worth around £3m tops...

NO NO NO NO NO NO I don't want to see any of the mentioned strikers. Beattie although a local lad still has pedigree remember his time at southampton and hughes has a knack of getting the best out of players, but no we have roberts. Santa Cruz well if he can only get 1 in 5 playing with the likes of schwienstieger, van Bommel, podolski, ze roberto etc, then no who cares if scored a hat-trick againast colombia I think its far to big a risk, potetial yes but we need a proven goal scorer. the belgian lads alright but we have rigters and derb's so do we really need another youngster. Defoe well yes hell yes but money is the issue, although if fulham can splash 20 plus million then i can only assume that the proposed takeover is hindering the spending. I hope we other irons in the fire I want to see pace up-front real pace and thats why smith is out and again he's quite similiar to roberts and if he wants a target man then beattie cheaper local lad HUGE point to prove. the other thing is we need a right back along with someone to back up warnock. I reckon its all paper talk as always we seem to linked with all these players and then someone else arrives, Hughes will get it right, just please none of the above.

to be honest, mido isnt the man for rovers and i think sparky knows that. he ditched us last season and has come out this summer and said a permanent move spurs was the wrong decision for him. now the move to brum is falling thru, i just hope he doesnt come to us.
as for roque santa cruz, he would be a great signing. for his age he has bags of experience and is a talented player. his problem at bayern could be related to sambas at berlin. he isnt a huge player in germany so has never been given the chance to prove himself so most appearances are as subs or interrupted injuries/suspensions

. the reason he is fourth choice is because they have just bought klose and luca toni for around £18m and they are proven regular goalscorers in their respective leagues and also they have podolski who is the brightest talent in germany.
one thing we all agree on though is james beattie. why is he being linked with us?? it might be an outlandish statement but id rather jeffers was on the bench...

I have heard that Bobby Zamora could also be a possibility. To some he is past his best, but I feel, along with Tevez, he kept West Ham up last season. He has got pace, strength and the ability to shoot from outside the area, which our strikers do not have at the moment. So I say get him on board!
To improve our squad in other departments, I feel we need a replacement for when Savage retires, and who better than Darren Fletcher. He has now obviously dropped down the order at Man united but still has the quality to be in any premiership club, and i am sure one of our rival clubs in the league will soon pick up on this, so i feel, if we have the money, we need to get him now before its too late!

Derbyshire has proved many times that he is good enough. Cant understand why anyone would think he isnt. He's only going to get better. We still need one more striker. To really push on in two fronts, Europe and the league.
If your going to class joe garner as one of our strikers, you could name many players from the reserves and youth that would give us 8 centre mid options!! The fact is there not ready to step up yet.
We're always looking to improve in all areas, which is great and shows the clubs ambiton to push on and make a fantastic squad.

I would hardly say I have come on this site EVERY DAY banging on about Mido, however I do think he could be a shout, as it's a FOOTBALL forum then it's an opinion and probably a more educated one than your respone earlier (Thick f**k - Nice). So inspire us all and let us know who we should sign, genius. Boring stats eh, well why don't we just lucky dip a name out the hat and let fate decide, you muppet! Stats are what people go off and I have only seen him in the Copa America, probably as you have, where he looked good but anyone can be good for a couple games, it's the track record you have to look at.

Gareth, how is Liverpool. That would be some mantle to take over from you! One idiot doesn't like my posts, most people on here hate you. Anyway, what is it you have against Derbyshire, the lad is a great prospect, he wouldn't be playing, and scoring, for England U21's if he wasn't. We should count ourselves lucky we have a local lad who loves to play in the shirt!
