ROVERS Under-23s made it four consecutive wins with a 3-0 success at Aston Villa this afternoon.

A first-half Callum Wright strike and goals from Willem Tomlinson and Dan Butterworth after the break saw Damien Johnson's side remain on the coat-tails of leaders Middlesbrough with their seventh win in 10 games.

The win temporarily moved Rovers top of the Premier League 2 Division Two table, with Boro’s late winner at West Brom saw them maintain their two-point advantage.

Scott Wharton was involved for Johnson’s side, despite being on the bench for the first-team in their win at Bury on Saturday and isn’t expected to travel to Oxford with the senior squad.

Lewis Travis, who also travelled with the squad to Bury, featured as Johnson’s men continued their excellent start to the campaign against a Villa side who went in to the game in fourth place.

Wright had Rovers ahead at half-time, with Tomlinson doubling the advantage with 15 minutes to go on his return to the side after serving a three game suspension.
And Dan Butterworth, a scorer in the Under-18’s FA Youth Cup win over Wrexham last week, came off the bench to round off an impressive afternoon for the Under-23s.
