AFTER a distinct lack of goals this last couple of weeks - Christian Eriksen’s destruction of Stephen Ward and Shane Duffy aside - appetites will definitely be whetted for the trip to a Bury side upended out of the cup 0-3 by non-league side Woking, writes Simon Smith.

What does concern me is that if young Joe Nuttall is not selected in the starting line-up that some of the vast following will commence lowing like cattle.

Trust me, if I was in charge of the side on Saturday, with the knowledge I have of Nuttall’s ability and his desire to impress against his hometown club I would definitely start him.

But I am not around him everyday like Tony Mowbray, watching him train or seeing his body language.

I don’t have to win the game.

I can point to any player on the pitch on Saturday and say “I wouldn’t have picked him; I’ve have picked yon mon” because that is what fans do.

Of course anything less than a similar 3-0 win will bring mutters because we are Blackburn Rovers and we have spent some money for the first time since 2012, or whenever, so we must cut a swathe through this division.

Come on, it’s not the Rovers if we don’t do it the hard way.

Promotion by play-off in 1992 after scraping into sixth despite being five points clear in March; winning the Premier League by losing at Anfield; winning the 2002 Worthington Cup final despite having half the team out and due to Brad Friedel performing astounding heroics.

All we can do is focus on the next game.

Looking ahead and planning where we would be if we had not lost or drawn a certain game, or where we may be if we win our games in hand and beat Wigan in March brings only madness.

We should beat Bury.

They are bottom of the league.

They are fresh from a cup humiliation.

We are a side that has good players in many positions.

We can all discuss further matters at 5pm Saturday.

Until then, get behind Tony Mowbray and the boys.
