A look at how the seven players released by Rovers have fared since leaving Ewood Park.

HOPE AKPAN

Akpan was the first of the players let go by Rovers to earn himself a new club, joining Championship side Burton Albion on a one-year deal in July.

The 26-year-old to agree a deal to stay in the Championship before the season began and has started four games, as well as making a further four appearances from the bench.

Lancashire Telegraph:

His cause for the Brewers, who sit just outside the relegation places, wasn’t helped by a red card 13 minutes after coming on against Middlesbrough on August 15 where he was shown a straight red card for a poor tackle after over-running the ball.

He did start the EFL Cup defeat at Manchester United on his first appearance back on September 20 and has made five Championship outings since.

WES BROWN

Always stated his desire to continue playing during his time at Rovers and the 38-year-old opted for a move to the Indian Super League with Kerala Blasters having trained with Macclesfield Town during the summer.

With the new season set to get underway later this month, Brown will be eyeing his debut for the club who are part-owned by Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and managed by former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen.

Lancashire Telegraph:

“I can't wait to play in front of one of the best fans in the world, Kerala. See you soon!” Brown tweeted in August after agreeing his new deal.

Brown played eight times for Rovers, including two in the Checkatrade Trophy, after agreeing a 12 month deal following his departure from Sunderland.

GORDON GREER

Released 12 months after re-joining Rovers, Greer did return with the rest of the squad to pre-season training in June to maintain a level of fitness despite not being offered a new deal.

He made 25 appearances in all for Rovers in 2015/16, the last of which being the 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Manchester in February, but didn’t even make a matchday squad after Tony Mowbray’s arrival in February.

Lancashire Telegraph:

Now 36, Greer travelled out to Austria to spend time on trial with League One side Bradford City, but couldn’t strike a deal with the Bantams.

Instead, he returned to Kilmarnock where he had previously spent four years and has started all 13 of their Scottish Premiership fixtures, with the club sitting 10th in the table.

DANNY GUTHRIE

The midfielder’s time at Ewood Park was blighted by injuries but had become a key member of the side in his final months at the club prior to his release.

The 30-year-old is yet to find a new home after leaving Rovers, but isn’t without interest.

Clubs in the MLS and Asia are weighing up the possibility of offering a deal to the former Newcastle United man, with Guthrie reported to have already rejected the advances of Cypriot side APOEL Limmasol.

Lancashire Telegraph:

Clubs interested are said to include Thailand Premier League clubs Buriam United and Muangthong United.

During his time looking for a club he helped out Oakengates Athletic in the Sportsjam Regional League Premier Division outfit in his native  Shropshire.

ADAM HENLEY

Still searching for a new club, Henley could take up interest from the MLS in 2018 as he looks to kickstart his career after an injury-hit end to his time with Rovers.

He is however, currently on trial with League One side Portsmouth and played 90 minutes in their Premier League Cup draw with Leicester City on Monday in his quest to earn a deal.

His 13-year spell with the Rovers came to an end in June having made just three appearances in 2016/17 and none since August. His former boss, Gary Bowyer, handed him a trial with Blackpool earlier in the season but a deal wasn’t forthcoming.

Lancashire Telegraph:

Henley played 94 times for Rovers in all competitions, including eight in the Premier League campaign of 2011/12, and was rewarded with a long-term contract in 2012, going on to be capped twice by Wales.

JASON LOWE

The Rovers skipper ended his long association with the club in the summer, but it wasn’t until transfer deadline day that the former England Under-21 international secured himself a new club.

Lowe had played for Premier League side West Brom on trial during their summer training camp in Austria, but Tony Pulis decided against handing the 26-year-old a permanent deal.

However, former Blues boss Harry Redknapp snapped up the versatile Lowe on a one-year deal and he would start three consecutive games in September at right-back for Birmingham after joining.

Lancashire Telegraph:

But struggling at the wrong end of the Championship table, and with Redknapp having been replaced by Steve Cotterill, things haven’t worked out as smoothly for Lowe.

Booked in his opening two games, and substituted after just four minutes in his third, the hamstring injury picked up against Preston on September 16 has ruled him out of action since.

And it won’t be a straightforward route back in to the starting line-up for Lowe, competing with Maxime Colin and Emiliano Nsue for the right-back spot, and with the likes of David Davis, Maikel Kieftenbeld, Cheikh Ndoye, Craig Gardner, Jeremie Boga and Stephen Gleeson in the middle of the park.

ANTHONY STOKES

Finally secured a long-awaited to Hibernian after his release from Rovers was finalised in July following a controversial 12 months in East Lancashire.

His deal was brought to an end two years earlier, finding the net just four times in 14 times in a spell that brought him headlines for the wrong reasons following his conviction for an assault which pre-dated his arrival at the club.

But back at Easter Road, and a club which he said holds a special place in his heart, things have started well for the Irishman.

Lancashire Telegraph:

He is already just one appearance short of the 14 he managed in the whole of last season and has eight goals to his name, four in the league and four in the Scottish League Cup, including one in the semi-final defeat to Celtic.

Was criticised for his application in training by a former team-mate, but responded by saying: “It’s about what you do on a Saturday, not what you do throughout the week.

“There are great trainers out there who could play for Barcelona Monday to Friday, but it’s about going out on the pitch and performing on a Saturday.

“I feel like, especially in my time in Scotland, my stats speak for themselves.”

Indeed they do, 41 goals in 85 games for Hibs who sit third in the Scottish Premiership table, three points behind leaders Celtic.

Of the loan players to return to their parent clubs after spells at Rovers:

Sam Gallagher: Currently on loan at Birmingham City (11 appearances, one goal) having signed a new deal with Southampton in the summer.

Tommie Hoban: Was set for another loan spell in the Championship before more injury woes for the defender, with the Watford man set to miss the majority of the season with a knee injury.

Lucas Joao: Still at Sheffield Wednesday, mainly used in their Under-23s so far, but has made six first-team appearances, scoring in the derby defeat to United in September.

Marvin Emnes: Was released by Swansea but two days before the transfer deadline he moved to Turkish Super Lig side Akhisar Belediyespor where he is yet to score in three outings.

Stephen Hendrie: Released by West Ham but snapped up by former side Southend.  Played against Rovers on the opening day and has made 10 appearances in all for the Blues.
