TONY Mowbray believes Rovers have set the standard for what it takes to win games in League One after a 1-0 victory at Bradford City.

Dominic Samuel’s goal three minutes after the break handed Rovers their first three points of the campaign at the third attempt.

After back-to-back defeats, Mowbray demanded more of a competitive edge from his side who put in a spirited performance to get up and running.

“I said to them, that’s the standard and you can’t drop below that, “Mowbray told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“It’s important that players demand of other players.

“That’s the standard and if we reproduce that every week then we will win enough matches to have a decent season I’m sure.

“Football is about winning and the expectation that we’re trying to build is that we expect to win and be at the top end of the table.

“There’s no divine right to hit the ground running.  We have nine new players, people are still trying to adapt. They have to acclimatise quickly.

“We have come to a place where they haven’t lost in the league in 18 months, 30-odd games, and I said to the team before that was the challenge, let’s show the quality that Blackburn Rovers are going to have in League One this season and be the team that does it.

“We have to build on that now.”

Rovers were backed by almost 2,000 fans at Bradford, with Mowbray delighted to reward them with three points.

Mowbray added: “The dressing was bouncing before the game.

“These people pay a lot of money coming here, they don’t want their weekend ruined by a lacklustre performance.

“They want to see passion, emotion, their team carrying a badge of honour.

“That first 30 seconds we had two efforts on goal but at half-time my one frustration was that we needed to show more quality in the final third.

“If we had taken more care on the crossing, final pass, then we could have had a greater advantage.

“But we have picked up our first three points up and we have to build on that.”
