Tom Heaton 6

Came tantalisingly close to saving the penalty. Heart in mouth first half moment when Grosicki lobbed him and crossbar.

Matt Lowton 7

Good defensively against a tricky opponent in Grosicki. Read the game well and stepped in to intercept on several occasions.

Michael Keane 8 (Man of the Match)

Unlucky with the handball but took his goal like a 30-a-season striker. Won a lot of headers and was good on the ball. Looking a really classy operator these days.

Ben Mee 7

Defensively solid. Aggressive in the air when the challenge came.

Stephen Ward 7

Given a tough test by the tongue twisting pair of Elmohamady and Elabdellaoui but stood up to it well.

Lancashire Telegraph:

George Boyd 7

Saw plenty of the ball in the early stages and came inside to take up some clever positions. Linked up with Lowton well.

Joey Barton 6

Not his best performance since his return but combined well with a relatively new midfielder partner at times.

Ashley Westwood 7

Saw both sides of his game. Combative at times and one excellent ball over the top for Gray in second half..

Robbie Brady 6

Found plenty of space, especially first half, but final ball wasn’t quite there for most of the afternoon.

Lancashire Telegraph:

Ashley Barnes 5

First booking seems harsh but no complaints with second and committed a lot of fouls.

Andre Gray 6

Tried to beat Maguire and Ranocchia with pace and so nearly worked in the second half when he shot just wide.
