JAMES Tarkowski has backed Burnley to show their resolve and bounce back from their FA Cup humiliation.

The Clarets will this week bid to put their defeat to non-league side Lincoln behind them as they prepare for a run of four successive Premier League away games that could form a crucial part of their season.

That run begins with a trip to 18th-placed Hull City on Saturday and victory will increase Burnley’s advantage over the bottom three with less than a third of the campaign to go.

Defeat to the National League Imps at Turf Moor was a huge shock considering the Clarets’ home record, but they have bounced back from a defeat with a victory on six occasions this season.

And if they can do so for a seventh time at the KCOM Stadium they will take a giant step towards securing Premier League survival.

“It’s something that we’ve done all season,” Tarkowski said of the ability to respond to a setback.

“We’ve had a few disappointments away from home and usually, the week after, we pick up a result.

“Lincoln is probably our first real disappointment at home where we’ve probably not deserved to get what we wanted.

“We’ve had a few games that we’ve lost and probably deserved something but we can’t complain too much. It was a battle all day and they’ve won the battle in the end.”

The Clarets have only suffered back to back defeats four times this season and former Brentford man Tarkowski believes that ability to quickly move on comes from Sean Dyche.

“We will (move on),” Tarkowski said of the Lincoln defeat.

“The gaffer is like that himself - we’ll park results to the side whether we win or lose and move on to the next one. We’ll be back bright and sharp and look forward to the game at the weekend.”

Burnley were in the unusual position of being heavy favourites to win when Lincoln visited Saturday, and while there have been suggestions they struggled with that tag, Tarkowski made the point that they consider themselves favourites for most game at home.

“When you come in to the game as a favourite you expect to win,” the 24-year-old said. “We go in to most games here thinking that we’re favourites.

“Obviously against a team from the Conference you’re going to be even bigger favourites so you expect to win. Every defeat hurts for me, whether it’s against a team from the Conference or whether it’s a team from the Premier League. They all really hurt.”

Tarkowski was involved in several aerial tussles with Lincoln striker Matt Rhead, while Joey Barton also clashed with the physical frontman, and Tarkowski believes they were both trying to wind each other up.

“He’s a big fella,” he said of Rhead. “I played against him before a few years back so I knew what to expect. For his size and physique he’s actually more technically gifted than what you’d expect.

“He was a handful all day but we knew what to expect.

“Joey knows what he’s doing. They were both trying to get under each other’s skin but they both know what they are doing. Joey is a clever man and anything he does is for the right reasons.”
