OWEN Coyle says Darragh Lenihan must learn not to let his frustrations get the better of him after being sent off in Rovers’ Boxing Day defeat at Barnsley.

The defender looks set to miss the next three games following his red card in the closing stages of the Oakwell defeat for a poorly timed tackle on Reds midfielder Sam Morsy.

Rovers are unlikely to appeal the straight red card, meaning yet another re-shuffle will be needed in the centre of defence for Saturday’s game at promotion-chasing Huddersfield.

And Coyle believes that while the 22-year-old is set for a bright future, he must learn to deal with the “red mist”.

“I think he felt aggrieved that we should have had a penalty just prior to that, the red mist descended, and he jumped in to the tackle,” Coyle said.

“There was no malice in the tackle, he’s not a malicious player, he plays hard and fair, but he gave the referee a decision to make.

“He has to understand that when the red mist descends, that’s when you’ve got to keep your concentration and that focus and make sure you’re not diving in to tackles.

“There’s no doubt he will develop in to a wonderful young player.

“He wears his heart on his sleeve and he loves the club.

“Darragh will now have to accept the punishment that will come his way.”

The red card was Lenihan’s first of his professional career in his 70th game, though he has been booked in 18 of his 54 Rovers outings.

Jason Lowe will serve the second of his two-match ban at Huddersfield after picking up his 10th yellow card of the season in the defeat to Reading on December 17.

There were injury returns for Charlie Mulgrew, Corry Evans and Danny Guthrie at Barnsley, but Ben Marshall missed the game at Oakwell with a groin injury.

Coyle admitted he is unsure whether Marshall, who is a transfer target for former boss Paul Lambert at Wolves, will be fit for the Huddersfield trip.

“He felt his groin the other day he said, and wasn’t fit enough to make the Barnsley game,” Coyle said.

“We will have to wait and see if he’s fit for Huddersfield.

“Having said that, I thought young Ryan Nyambe did well and he’s set for a big future at the club.

“That’s what we want, players who want to be at Blackburn Rovers and that ‘s what he’s shown.”

The Barnsley loss was a fourth straight defeat for Rovers who remain in the bottom three at the halfway stage of the season.

Coyle revealed there was a disappointment among the players in the dressing room as their losing run continued. But he says he will take the criticism which comes their way to allow the players to focus on their job in hand.

He added: “As a manager you have to take that accountability and responsibility, and I accept that, I’ve said that to the players.

“I will take that, their responsibility is to go out on the park and get the points for their performances.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt that we’re putting plenty of heart in to our performances, and creating chances, but we’ve come off the wrong side again.

“The mood is that they are very disappointed.

“But it turns very quickly. You need to have that courage in your convictions, stand up and be counted, and be brave enough to go and do the right stuff to earn the points.”
