JASON Lowe has come in for some criticism from the terraces this year and whilst much of it is justified, I think it’s unfair. He is not a natural full-back and has often been exposed but he puts in 100 per cent and you can’t criticise that.

His suspension has come as a blessing though and whilst Ryan Nyambe must be considered for the role, I’d like to see Ben Marshall deployed there. It's a position that’s underrated and our weakness at both full-back positions has contributed to our downfall this season.

A merely defensive full-back invites teams to attack them, whereas an advancing full-back pegs teams back and creates space and opportunities for the winger – something Marshall himself has been deprived of.

Because of this, Marshall’s best football over the last 12 months has been from right-back, and until we can bring in a quality replacement, he must be the one to play there.

I WOULD not hesitate to play Ben Marshall at full-back even though it might not be his favoured position. In the past he has impressed in that role and he adds something different to the team from an attacking perspective.

Unfortunately he isn’t breaking any pots where he is currently playing so perhaps a change will rekindle some fire and commitment to his game which has at times been lacking.

Given his undoubted ability he should be able to make an impressive contribution and hopefully regain the trust and respect of the Rovers supporters.

JASON Lowe’s suspension leaves no option other than to move Ben Marshall to right-back. We have more squad depth further up the pitch to fill Marshall’s position, but little in defence with Adam Henley still out of action.

It is an enforced change that has worked in the past, so there is little need to risk young Ryan Nyambe, who has little experience of first-team football. Marshall is adept at full-back, but we will still miss his quality going forward, even if he is yet to recapture his form from previous seasons.

Supporters may be happy to see Lowe and Henley out of the team, as both have come in for some strong criticism. But let’s not forget these are the only two players in our squad to have played Premier League football at Rovers.

Craig Conway is likely to be given the captain’s armband in Lowe’s absence. And he deserves it based on his performances and work rate throughout his Rovers career.

IN the past Ben Marshall has played well there and if he moves back to right-back then maybe it will give Owen Coyle the opportunity to finally play Martin Samuelson who scored for Norway on Tuesday.

The problem is that Marshall likes to get forward and attack so it could leave us very open on the wings on occasions; not that we defend much better when there is actually a player there. But no, I think Marshall can be a good replacement. In fact he’s probably a better right-back than Adam Henley at times.

But I think it’s a real shame we don’t actually have a solid right-back who we can rely on. It’s worrying when you have one out-and-out right-back like Henley but you can’t trust him to perform.

Good wing-backs are something Blackburn fans have been crying out for years; we’ve had nothing bar the Olsson twins.

It’s great that we have the flexibility in the team but sad that we have to call on our attacking right-midfielder to do the job.
