BLACKBURN Rovers boss Owen Coyle wants the club’s owners Venky’s to reinvest more of the £10m they have banked in player sales this summer.

Rovers will go into the international break winless and bottom of the Championship after their former player of the year Tom Cairney condemned them to a 1-0 home loss to Fulham on Saturday.

Coyle believes the performance offered evidence his new-look side are showing signs of improvement after a wretched start to the league season.

But he admits he still wants to bring in more additions before the transfer window closes at 11am on Wednesday.

Coyle has made 10 signings since taking over the Rovers reins in June.

However only one, the £250,000 capture of left-back Derrick Williams, was for a fee.

But with Shane Duffy having followed Grant Hanley out of the Ewood Park exit door for big money he is hoping Venky’s will release more funds in the next 72 hours.

Coyle said: “We knew coming in how big a job it was going to be.

"After first challenging to get into the play-offs, the club’s position has went and went and, if it hadn’t won its last two games last season, it would have finished 21st.

“And from that you lose good players. We’ve brought in £10m for Grant Hanley and Shane Duffy and they are top, top players at this level.

“From that we’ve invested £250,000 in Derrick Williams. The rest we’ve utilised the loan market and Bosmans (free transfers) but now we need to try and find some cash to bring in one or two players who can help us.

“We need a couple of difference makers to the group we’ve got.”

Rovers’ bid to sign Abdoul Ba appears over after Lens made it clear they do not want to sell the centre-back despite the player wanting to make the move.

And when asked whether he believes he will get cash to spend Coyle said: “I had three bids turned for the lad in France and his club has said under no circumstances are they selling. So I know there was money there available to buy him so we’ll continue to try to use that money somewhere and try and find one or two things.

“That’s what we have to do. Is it to the level we’ve brought in? Probably not. But if we can find some money to get one or two it will help the group.”

Coyle is still chasing another centre-back. However one potential target, West Ham United’s Reece Burke, looks poised to join Wigan Athletic on loan.

The Rovers manager also wants another midfielder with Bolton Wanderers’ Jay Spearing having been linked with a return to the club.

Coyle said: “I need competition in certain areas and we’ll continue to source the market to see what’s available. But we certainly want to add before Wednesday night, that’s for sure.”

Asked about the future of Ben Marshall, who has turned down the offer of a new deal with less than 12 months remaining on his current contract, Coyle said: “There’s always going to be interest in those sort of players.

"I had a good chat with Ben yesterday. He said to me he likes it at the club, he likes playing for us, and he’s enjoying the training

"That’s one of those ones between now and Wednesday we will monitor.”
