OWEN Coyle has called on his Blackburn Rovers players to match their second-half performance at Cardiff City as they try to register their first points of the season tomorrow.

The Rovers boss witnessed a third first-half horror show in a row in the Welsh capital, adding to woeful opening 45 minutes against Norwich City and Wigan Athletic.

Two Shane Duffy own goals left his side with too much to do.

But he says the latter part of Tuesday’s 2-1 reverse to the Bluebirds was better, with Danny Graham opening his Championship account, and he wants more of the same against Burton Albion at Ewood Park tomorrow (3pm).

“What we could do with is replicating the second-half performance from Cardiff and showing our quality on a consistent basis,” he said.

“If you do that it will lead to winning games, it’s very simple.

“We’re not sitting here with 15 or 20 points to catch up, we’ve had two away games and one at home, and now we’ve got an opportunity with the two home (league) games to pick up points.

“There’s always a tendency that you over-analyse. What’s important is that you analyse fairly and you understand where you can improve. We have the experience of doing and being successful in doing it, and that’s what we’ll do.”

The Brewers were promoted last season after finishing second in League One, and Nigel Clough’s side registered their first win of the season on Tuesday night when they beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 at the Pirelli Stadium.

But Albion’s visit is followed by an EFL Cup game with Crewe Alexandra and the visit of Fulham next weekend, and Coyle sees it as a chance to get some much-needed momentum going for a club struggling at the foot of the table.

He said: “We’ve got to set ourselves up now for the three home games and be ready to start against a good team, which Burton are.

“They showed that the other night against Sheffield Wednesday when they thoroughly deserved their victory.

“They’ve got a good set-up and some good players, and because a number of those players have come up from that level (below), they have that freshness, that winning habit and that energy.

“We have to make sure we match that and if we do that, of course you look then for your ability to kick in.

“It an opportunity for us to get back to Ewood, to go and win our games.

“A win does the same for every team in the league - it breeds confidence, it gives you that momentum that we all want.”
