FOLLOWING the departure of Joey Barton to Rangers, Burnley will be looking to strengthen the ranks in central midfield this summer.

Barton’s decision to reject a contract extension at Turf Moor and sign a two-year deal at Ibrox means Clarets chief Sean Dyche could be short of options for the return to the Premier League.

Here we look at five players Burnley could look at to solve that shortage.

OLIVER NORWOOD

Lancashire Telegraph:

BORN in Burnley and with family still living in the area a move to Turf Moor will appeal for the 25-year-old, as will making the step up to the Premier League.

His performances for Northern Ireland in Euro 2016 will have done his chances of a move no harm and he would also be a cheap option with just a year left on his Reading contract and the Royals likely to be willing to listen to offers.

CHARLIE ADAM

Lancashire Telegraph:

DYCHE is an admirer of Adam and a move for the 30-year-old, currently at Stoke, may yet be forthcoming.

His range of passing would be a big plus for Burnley, as would his ability to add goals from midfield. He also brings a wealth of experience having featured for Blackpool, Liverpool and the Potters in the Premier League.

If he does sign then it may mean David Jones makes way in the team.

JOE LEDLEY

Lancashire Telegraph:

ANOTHER experienced campaigner that the Clarets have been linked with, Ledley has made as many headlines for his dancing as his football in France so far.

But the fact he is even playing for Wales in Euro 2016 says a great deal about his character considering he broke a bone in his leg in May.

He started just 11 times for Crystal Palace last season so could be interested in more regular first-team football elsewhere in the Premier League.

ADAM NAGY

Lancashire Telegraph:

THE time may have passed to lure the in-demand Hungarian to Turf Moor but he looks a natural fit for the Burnley midfield.

The 21-year-old has been hugely impressive for Hungary in Euro 2016 sitting in front of his defence and his energy and pressing would see him fit in well in the Clarets side.

Competition for the midfielder has heated up following his eye-catching displays in France, with Leicester City, Marseille and Benfica interested in Ferencvaros’ £1.2million-rated player.

MARKO ROG

Lancashire Telegraph:

ANOTHER young starlet who has done his chances of a move to a major European league no harm whatsoever in France.

Rog starred for Croatia in their win over Spain and the 20-year-old already has Champions League experience under his belt with Dinamo Zagreb.

Might cost upwards of £8million but the money is there in the Premier League now.
