DEFENDING Lancashire League champions Burnley head to Accrington tomorrow on the back of a record-breaking afternoon.

Bharat Tripathi’s side made it five straight wins by beating Nelson by 112 runs at MyProtein Turf Moor last Saturday as they continued to move ominously into top gear.

Star of the show was David Brown who returned to form in thrilling fashion with a stunning unbeaten century.

Brown set a new Burnley batting record for limited overs league matches by hammering 162 from 145 balls.

But as the number three walked from the field he still had no idea he had bettered Jon Clare’s previous record of 161 against East Lancs in 2006.

Big-hitting Brown, who broke the record thanks to a six on the last ball of the match, said: “It was a great day and a great win.

“Runs have been a little hard to come by but I always believed that once I got myself in they would come.

“I was pleased with my score but I had no idea at the time, when I was hitting that six off the last ball, that it was a record.

“It’s a nice feeling to have the record but the win was not just about what I did. It was a by-product of what was a brilliant batting display.”

Brown hit 18 fours and six sixes and put on 160 for the second wicket with Vishal Tripathi, who smashed 81 from 90 balls, including nine four and two sixes, to pass 500 runs for the season.

And if that was not enough Chris Burton, who Brown hailed as an ‘unsung hero’, made 54 from 51 balls in a third-wicket stand of 140 as Burnley set 321-3, which equalled their highest ever in league matches, set at Bacup in 2010.

Nelson made a fight of it but they could not stop their opponents from marching on.

But Brown insists Burnley will not take Accrington, who have won three of their last four matches in all competitions, lightly.

He said: “We’ve played really well in the last four or five weeks and the great thing about this squad is that we’ve got a desire to really earn every win we get.

“Accrington are a good team. Their pro is one of the best in the league and they have some very good amateurs.

“We know we’ll have to play to our best to get anything but, if we do that, we always feel we have enough to win games.”

Second-placed Burnley are four points behind table-topping Ramsbottom, who travel to Todmorden tomorrow.

Lowerhouse, who are four points further back in third, entertain Enfield, while fourth-placed Colne head to Rishton.

Elsewhere, Bacup are at home to Church, Haslingden host East Lancs, and Nelson welcome Rawtenstall to the Seedhill Ground.
