BURNLEY now have a ‘great chance’ to establish themselves as a Premier League club for years to come according to winger George Boyd.

Victory over Queens Park Rangers on Monday secured the Clarets' third promotion to the Premier League since 2008/09, and the second in the last three seasons.

This time around the club head to the promised land debt free, with a £10.6 million redevelopment of the training ground well under way, and Boyd believes there is now an opportunity for Burnley to survive in the top flight.

“If we’d stayed up last time the club would have grown and grown and we’d have stayed in for years,” said the 30-year-old. “With the training ground coming along and the money in the Premier League it’s a great chance to establish ourselves.”

Boyd experienced promotion to the top flight with Hull after a 13-game loan spell in 2012/13 and then spent a year in the Premier League with the Tigers before his £3 million move to Turf Moor at the start of the Clarets' campaign amongst the elite a year ago.

Burnley had to wait 10 games for a first win in 2014/15 and although they rallied after that it was too late to survive, but they have returned at the first attempt and Boyd is delighted to have silenced the doubters.

“We had a lot of doubters, we lost a few key players, but the gaffer made some great signings,” he said. “The squad had stayed together for most of the two years I’ve been here. That solidity has been great and long may it continue and we can push on next yea.”

Of the celebrations after Sam Vokes’ goal had clinched promotion, Boyd added: “You’ve got to savour these moments, they don’t come around too often but they do get better every time.”

The former Peterborough man has now set his sights on securing the Championship title with victory at Charlton on the final day.

“We can play with freedom. We want the title, the boys who came up last time came second so they want it especially this time. We’ll go out and fully expect to get it.”
