JOHN Coleman praised the 580 fans who cheered Stanley to a 1-0 victory, which means promotion is in their hands with one game to go.

Mark Hughes scored the winner at Wycombe on 78 minutes and now it’s all down to Stevenage at home next Saturday in the final match of the season.

“The fans deserve a lot of praise, not just today but all season, as the organisers like Ash Seed have played a big part,” said Coleman.

“The fans were magnificent today, even before kick off as the reception we got when we arrived at the ground brought a tear to my eye.

“They gave up their time and cash to come and it was fantastic and I hope it’s the same atmosphere next week.”

Coleman praised his team as they made it 11 games unbeaten and five away wins on the spin – but with Oxford and Bristol Rovers winning it means the two final automatic promotion places won’t be decided although Stanley are in pole position to go up with Northampton.

“I am delighted for the players but it is a little bit flat as everyone else won,” said the Reds boss.

“But we had to govern our own fate. We knew we had to win today, that was essential and we knew at half time that the other teams were winning and then, with 15 minutes to go, it was still 0-0.

“It was vital we got the goal but I am sure even the most ardent Wycombe fan wouldn’t begrudge us the win because the chances we have created and their 'keeper pulled off some unbelievable saves and was fantastic and we could have had three or four penalties.

“But give our lads their due, they haven’t let their heads drop, they haven’t felt it is not going to be our day and sulked.

"They have got on with it and we got what we deserved on the day.”

Coleman admitted Stanley looked nervy in the opening stages, which was to be expected with so much at stake.

“Wycombe smothered us in the opening 15 minutes and fair play to them, they know what we do and we have worked hard on what they do.

“But as the game settled, we created chances and their 'keeper has made two fantastic saves.

"The game lulled in the second half but we picked the tempo up and we got exactly what we deserved.”

Despite Mark Hughes being the unlikeliest of match winners, Coleman had an idea that he might just deliver.

“Ask Mike Newell who I had called to score a goal in the car going to the coach,” he said.

“I said Mark Hughes always gets a goal every season and he hasn’t got one this season.

“He was due one and he thankfully he has popped up with it.”

The Reds boss was full of praise for all his players but singled out the efforts of Adam Buxton.

“I know I shouldn’t because everyone of them was magnificent but Adam Buxton took it to another level.

"He was unbelievable.

"He was like a vintage Larry Lloyd or a John Terry in the air.

"He must have won every header in the air. His overall play was fantastic.

Coleman admitted there will be nerves when Stanley host Stevenage next weekend knowing victory will guarantee promotion to League One.

“It will be nerves because we are at home,” he said.

“I was always get more excited when we are away but I’ll be nervous next week.

“But it’s in our hands, we have got 84 points and that in itself is a remarkable achievement and now we just have to finish it off.”
