BURNLEY will look at securing Joey Barton on a new contract “when we need to”, with boss Sean Dyche admitting he had no concerns the midfielder would want to leave Turf Moor this summer.

Dyche refused to be drawn on whether Barton, who only signed a one-year contract when he arrived in August, was close to penning an extended deal.

But he made clear his admiration for the way the 33-year-old has settled at the club, and said his season with the Clarets had been good for both parties with Burnley currently second in the table.

“He’s a good player, he’s enjoying what he does here. He’s been good for us and it’s been good for him,” said Dyche.

“It’s a win-win at the moment, he wants to be thirsty for more and so do we. We’ll look at that when we need to.”

Barton has started every league game for the Clarets since October and has spoken of how he is enjoying life at Turf Moor.

And Dyche said there was no concerns about his future at this moment in time.

“He’s in such a good place with us, there’s a mutual respect that’s quite evident,” said the Burnley boss. “There’s no worries about that. He’s fine.

“He’s enjoying it, that’s where it lives.

“He’s playing well, he’s affecting the group, the group are having him, he’s enjoying them, enjoying the club and what we offer.”

Veteran defender Michael Duff is also out of contract in the summer, and Dyche said talks with the 38-year-old about a coaching role at Turf Moor – if he decides to hang up his boots – were ongoing.

Duff hasn’t featured for the Clarets since the 3-0 loss at Boxing Day, with Ben Mee moved across to centre back to partner Michael Keane after that, with Stephen Ward coming in at left-back.

And while Dyche is keen to keep the former Cheltenham defender at the club, he said it was more than just a sentimental offer for a club stalwart.

“We’re talking to Duffo about his future at the club in a given role,” said Dyche of the man who has played more than 380 games for Burnley.

“It’s not ‘the old great servant so keep him’, there’s more to it than that, he’s got his pro licence, he’s seen a lot of managers, he’s picked up a lot of different things from managers, and he can offer that back.

“It’s not a case of he’s been a great servant we’ll find something for him, he’s ready for us to find something.

“Those conversations are ongoing.”
