Jason Steele: Paul Lambert’s winning mentality is beginning to rub off on Blackburn Rovers players

Lambert won the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund and nine major honours with Celtic as a player before leading Norwich City to back-to-back promotions as a manager.

And, after an up and down start to his Ewood Park reign, the former Scotland midfielder has now guided revitalised Rovers to four straight home league victories.

They have the chance to stretch that run to five tomorrow when they play host to Leeds United (12.30pm).

And Steele said: “The gaffer has made a massive impact, first and foremost through the demands he puts on the team and the lads.

“We all know if we don’t do our job properly we won’t play. That’s a good moral to have in any job; that if you don’t do it properly you won’t be doing it for very long. That’s what we all know here.

“And I think the winning mentality he has is rubbing off on us. Now we’ve just got to make sure we carry that on.

“When you see your manager has won promotion and also won umpteen trophies as a player, including the Champions League, you think straight away, ‘I’m going to listen to him’, as he’s obviously got something he’s wanting to give us.

“He can help us and hopefully next season we can have a right go at it.”

Rovers are second in the Championship form table after recording four successive home league wins for the first time in six years.

But the players’ belief has also been boosted by their performances away to high-flying Middlesbrough, Derby County and Burnley.

Steele said: “We see every team in this league as a chance to get three points.

“We’ve had teams come to our ground and sit in their own half and try and get a 0-0.

“We don’t see the point in doing that.”

Rovers boast the fifth best defensive record in the Championship and on Tuesday kept their 11th sheet of the league campaign.

And Steele said: “We’ve got a good understanding and we’ve got a lot of strength in depth there.

“The likes of Killa (Matt Kilgallon) and Wardy (Elliott Ward), two solid centre-halves, and Henners (Adam Henley) are not playing, and then I’ve got Easty (Simon Eastwood) and David (Raya).

“The good competition is strong and we all know we have to play well to stay in the side.”

Steele has played 34 consecutive matches after regaining his place from Raya in September.

His return of 11 clean sheets is the most the former Middlesbrough and England Under-21 keeper has achieved in a single season.

And Steele, 25, who produced a commanding display in Tuesday’s 2-0 home win over Birmingham City, said: “I think it’s the most consistent season of my career so far.

“I think it comes with age. I’m getting older and wiser now. I’m settled and hopefully I can have another clean sheet on Saturday.

“I think I’ve kept my most in a season but, if I’m in the team, I’d like to add at least four more in the rest of the season and get to 15.

“But listen, we’ve just got to keep winning football matches. That’s all what matters.”
