Double delight for Valley handballers

HASLINGDEN Handball Club's two under 13s teams ended the season on a high after they finished first and second in their respective leagues.

Playing in the North West Fruit Shoot League, Haslingden's A' team were crowned Division One champions after going through the entire season unbeaten while the B' team took second place in Division Two.

While it was a real team effort, Joe Moores, Nick Greenwood, Nathan Collinson and Laura McGuiness all deserve special mention as they were voted onto the league's "Dream Team" - Joe Moores also collected the Player of the Season award for Division One.

The success underlines the club's commitment to youth development as the junior teams are coached by Aden Woodall and Jonathan Haworth, ably assisted by Tom Halliwell and Stuart Latchford, all of whom are under 18 and have represented their country at national level.

Meanwhile, Haslingden is preparing to host the National Mini Handball Festival which will be held at Haslingden Sport Centre on Saturday, June 16.

The tournament will feature schools from Haslingden and Blackburn as well as across the North West.

Local schools to take part are St Andrew's, St Joseph's RCP School, Haslingden Primary and Newchurch St Nicholas Primary while St James, The Redeemer, Daisyfield and Shadsworth Juniors will all compete from Blackburn.

The four Blackburn schools recently took part in a competition against the four top teams in Bolton. And St James, The Redeemer and Daisyfield all reached the semi finals.

In the first semi final, St James beat The Redeemer 12-3 while Daisyfield defeated Bolton side St Paul's 7-6.

And in an all-Blackburn final, St James beat Daisyfield.
